Geektastic: The fact that there were FIVE drive-by shootings in Auckland over the weekend. What is this country turning into?

Where is the government and police action to find and imprison the perpetrators? They were quick enough to take the low hanging fruit by removing legally held firearms from law abiding owners but seem totally inactive when it comes to dealing with the actual criminals.

Whisky Tango Foxtrot indeed.

I blame the media for hyping this up. It's certainly more interesting to publish than the usual 'cat rescued from tree' stories we make in NZ.

The wheels of justice turn slowly but if you google around you will find plenty of happy endings with gun crims in the hands of the police.

I haven't seen a report from any incident that isn't gang on gang so you or I are extremely unlikely to become involved.

Unless there's something you're not telling us.

Anyone can be walking by a house when drug addict criminal thugs chose to open fire. Innocent bystanders can be - and have been - hit by stray rounds, ricochets etc.

We aren’t talking about skilled marksmen here….

I’d suggest someone grease the wheel bearings or discover the accelerator.

I frankly cannot understand why anyone needs to have a gun. It is a 'recreational' activity, not (yet) essential for defence or food. Hunters need to find another hobby. If shooting animals is necessary for culling, restrict it to qualified professionals. No-one else actually 'needs' a gun.

Nobody needs a set of golf clubs.  Nobody needs a saxophone.  Nobody needs to catch fish when food is available at the supermarket.  Nobody really needs to eat meat, or consume dairy, both of which are arguably cruel to animals and harm the environment.  Nobody needs a jetski, which waste fuel and harm the climate.  Nobody needs a spare bedroom in their house, especially when there are homeless people on the streets.  Nobody needs a car with more than 100hp.  Nobody needs to go on an overseas holiday.  Nobody needs more than two children.

Tell me where to draw the line

Shooting is a legitimate, internationally recognised sport and pastime.  I think we are going down a slippery slope when a committee somewhere decides what people "need" and ban things that aren't needed.  There are totalitarian states where private firearm ownership is not allowed, but I wouldn't want to live in any of them

allan: So got a longish survey from Air NZ following a WLG to CHC flight, which included N/A for all questions until I got to the ones for the new pre-flight safety video. So they know who I am, my Airpoints number and what flight I'm on, but they don't allow for the fact that ATR 72 flights do not have a safety video?

At least you were spared one of their “comedy” videos. Be grateful for small mercies.

The ones that end "for more information please read the card in the pocket in front of you"?

"Please watch the safety video sir!" "But I read the card! (and saved 4 and a half minutes of my life)"

Indeed. Nobody needs a car that will exceed 100KMH since that is the limit but most of us have one.

Switzerland has very high gun ownership and very low gun crime. You do not even need a licence to own a gun in fact - just to buy one. If they can manage that, so can NZ or any other country. It's all about the maturity of the residents I suppose.

They won't be making a big show of it and they won't tell you about it until it's sorted. There will be arrests and charges just like there have been in previous incidents. Feel free to create a topic for those that feel strongly about it.

Except for emergency services.

This is a bit distorted. Firstly, it is mandatory for Swiss men to keep a rifle and 5 rounds of ammunition at home, and to practice their shooting. Secondly, Switzerland has little gun regulation *because* it has little gun crime, and indeed very little crime in general. I would argue that that is because, generally speaking, Swiss are well off and a high standard of living, and therefore have a lot to lose by conviction and imprisonment.

When the median Kiwi is as well off as the median Swiss, I expect that we would also have little crime.

Some Subhuman doing a mass shooting in a elementary school killing 15 kids and a teacher.

This could also go in the 'what really affects me' thread.

Those poor families.

I wouldn't say taking some guns out of the streets was a bad move.

I do agree that this makes not much difference when gangs have access to those pretty much freely. Like the "smack law", criminalising parents that smack a kid's bottom, while doing nothing to prevent actual deaths inflicted by parents that have no idea of what they are doing with their lives. Too much on one side, too little on the other side.

Legally owned firearms are not "on the street".  They are locked up and you can't even have them on your person outside of your property without valid explanation.

What the compulsory buy out did do, was give those military style semi-autos an official price, which the gangs were happy to beat.  The policy may have increased the numbers of MSSAs in the possession of criminal gangs.

Would make motorsport really boring, but we don't *need* to do motorsport I guess.

I guess by the time we've gotten rid of all the things that it's been decided by others we don't need, the question will become "Whisky Tango Foxtrot is the point of living?".

Official policy can be legitimately criticised for many things, but this argument makes no sense to me. If people have weapons and are willing to sell them, the gangs that want them will pay whatever they cost. They are not going to be doing shopping comparisons on Pricespy.
