c71931f: Just recieved this (about the raincheck laptop/notebook) This is indicative spec only no model no. as yet. ASUS Intel Atom 1gb Ram 160 GB Hard Drive and 10.1 inch screen ? black in colour. 3 minutes ago

Yeah, the same old fertiliser they have been feeding us for a while now. Intel Atom but doesn't specify a 270 or 280 chip, a 160 GB hard drive but not whether it's a 5400rpm or slower. You assume it's going to be the fastest components available but the way they are dragging their feet on a model number ... certainly makes you wonder why they are so reluctant to say.

Their "indicative spec" only indicates they either aren't interested or don't want to let on. But hey ... at least it's black, right?

A reoccurring theme throughout the communications from HN is that the spec is the same. As far as I'm concerned, the most important spec for a netbook is the physical size / shape of the netbook. Their spec that they are matching should include this. An extra 1 or 2 cm is a big difference when it comes to portability.
I'm not sure that the statement no news is good news applies in this case.

The thing that I am possibly even more concerned about than the physical size and chassis that HN/Asus have chosen, is the issue of whether the internal components are actually going to be brand new components, or whether the components are going to be 'second hand' etc.

HN would have been keen to minimise their costs (losses) on this, so they will have asked Asus to build these units as cheaply as possibly.

And it wouldn't surprise me if this meant using components from returns.

So effectively we would be getting refurbished units, being passed off as new units.

Better communication and openness from HN would have helped to allay these concerns.

If and when I finally get my machine, I'm going to inspect it with a fine tooth comb to try to figure out if it is in fact 'new', or whether it might be a return/refurb. I guess things like checking how the packaging is sealed, whether their are marks or fingerprints on the machine, whether all gaps are evenly spaced, whether hinges feel firm, and whether the unit generally looks clean and new etc. Then I guess things like checking the software install, any remnants of other user's files on the hard drive, the battery condition, and listening for noises etc when being used.

I'm surprised that a company with such a high profile as HN continues to treat its customers this way. They say the machines are being built, but they still can't provide us with any specific information on them.

Nope, I so surprised to hear from them.

I think they might be accurate that it's a custom model. I could expect that ASUS either had spare parts or performed a downgrade on unsold stock or something to this effect which would mean there isn't a model number. I don't see any reason to hold back on a model number. I'd expect the only real way to know what we're getting is to wait and see unfortunately.
