Really enjoying a new series on Netflix - A Man in Full - staring Jeff Daniels. 7/10.
“Follows an Atlanta real estate mogul as he faces sudden bankruptcy, and tries to defend his empire from those attempting to capitalize on his fall from grace.”
Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
Quite excited to see that season 3 of Outlaws has been quietly dropped on Amazon Prime.
It's a series that stars Stephen Merchant and a supporting cast that is frankly excellent, as a bunch of very different people who end up working together on a Community Service project as a part of their various court-determined sentences for a range of misdemeanours.
There's a lawyer, a business owner with money issues, an activist, a "nice girl" rebelling, a rich girl with drug habits and more.
If you haven't seen season 1 and 2, but like a good English dramedy, I'd go check this out.
Bonus - it also stars Christopher Walken, playing the most Christopher Walken character ever.

We are really enjoying S2 of the excellent UK cop show The Responder, starring Martin Freeman, on BBC.
However we got a bit tripped up by a quirk with the show. It’s set in Liverpool and due to a combination of strong scouser accents, mumbly speech and variable sound-recording quality, we were having huge trouble understanding the dialogue. Unfortunately subtitles are not available on BBC on Apple TV.
Yesterday we noticed the show being promo’ed on TVNZ+. Checked it out and, yay, subtitles. So, having watched two episodes on BBC, we started TVNZ+ at E3. Then confusion reigned because we had already seen what we were watching - and it should have been a new episode. So we scrubbed forward and found stuff that we had not seen in that ‘episode’. Could not for the life us work out what the hell was going on - was doing our heads in.
After a lot of mucking around I had an idea: Checking, I found S2 on BBC is five one-hour episodes. S2 on TVNZ is six roughly 45-minute episodes. Very tricky. Maybe non-commercial BBC sell a different cut for commercial TV operators who want to add ads but keep to a one-hour limit - or perhaps more likely TVNZ do the cutting themselves.
It seems obvious now we know what is going on but last night it was almost too much for us old farts.

All of Hazbin Hotel on Amazon Prime. Nice to see an indie cartoon get picked up.

Thank you to those who suggested Clarkson's Farm. I have enjoyed it, very funny moments, a nice way to get an insight into farming and impressed by how much he and his girlfriend gave a go themselves. Pleased to read season four is being made.
Been at home for the last week with Covid, so have been watching a lot of TV (and some movies). I'm now thoroughly sick of the TV and am in desperate need of fresh air and real human contact!
House of the Dragon (S1, Neon) - 7/10
With S2 dropping my partner and I decided to rewatch S1 to refresh our memory. My main recollection from S1 the first time around was how confusing the characters were - many are similarly named (Laena/Laenor, Rhaenyra/Rhaenys, etc) and some even have a very similar look (with long, flowing white hair), that it can be hard to keep track of who is who. Coupled with an incredible incestuous storyline it's really challenging trying to keep track of everyone, and who is allied with whom. It also suffers from the same problem that often afflicted Game of Thrones, with very dark lighting making it hard to work out what is actually happening. I found turning on subtitles helped a little. I think I followed things a bit more the second time around, but it was still quite convoluted. It's a great story regardless - the machinations of the family politics are intriguing. But I think it suffers a little by comparison to the first few seasons of Game of Thrones.
Succession (S1, Neon) - 8/10
This has been on my list for a while but didn't really have time to commit to a new series. A week on the couch with Covid gave me the time I didn't have.
I wasn't sure about it to start with, but by the end of the second episode I was hooked. It's a dark dramedy with a dry sense of humour, something that isn't always evident. The general plot is about a Rupert Murdoch-esque family-owned media business, where the aging head of the family is mulling over handing the reins to his son Kendall. But there are lots of power plays, family politics, foul-ups, and all kinds of drama along the way. All of the characters are awful, but a bit like a car crash you just can't look away. Brian Cox as the head of the family is very compelling, but the scene stealer is Roman Roy played by Kieran Culkin. Matthew McFayden is fantastic too (though I'm not sure he always gets away with his American accent). I'm halfway through s2 (it helps that there's only four seasons, 10 episodes each), and I'm fascinated to see where it ends up.
Handle9: The Bear is back for season 3!
I’ve only watched episode 1 so far but it’s continued to be incredibly innovative and challenging TV. If it carries on this way it’ll be another amazing season.
IMO it’s the best tv show currently on.
Edit: and another - https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/article/2024/jun/28/it-isnt-hard-to-see-where-things-went-wrong-how-the-bear-went-off-the-boil
Handsomedan: The Boys has been typically explosive out of the gate in this latest season.
Controversial, but also fully expected. They have ramped up the violence and sexual depravity quite a bit, which should surprise absolutely nobody.
It’s a hard watch sometimes, but I’m so invested, I just look away for the bits I can’t stomach.
Homelander is so much like Jethro West*1000 with sup powers :)
Started watching Dark Matter on Apple TV+.
It's a dark scifi drama, which explores the possibility of a multiverse?
I'm only an episode in and part way through ep2, but it's good so far.
Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connolly are the two leads, with a strong supporting cast.
From IMDB:
A man is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could've lived, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from a most terrifying foe: himself.

Watched quite a bit of TV recently.
Watched the entirety of the new season of The Outlaws on Prime.
Really enjoyed it. Well worth watching.
Also watched the final episodes of the newest season of Upload on Prime - not as good as the earlier ones, but still a fun watch.
Watched the latest season of The Traitors UK on 3Now. That took a bit of getting into, but it got there in the end. Another quite good diversion.
Started watching The Traitors NZ last night on 3 - I do like Paul Henry in this role. I can see myself enjoying this too.
Watched a couple of seasons of Acapulco on Apple TV+ which is quite enjoyable, albeit a bit light and formulaic. More subtitles in the latter episodes than there were in the initial few.
Also finished Loot, Sugar and The Big Door Prize on Apple TV+ over the last few weeks. Enjoyed all three, but Sugar was by far the best...until it wasn't.
