@tdgeek with respect I disagree. The power plant did not spontaneously fail. It failed as a direct result of the offshore earthquake and resulting tsunami.

Disagree. They have more risk than us. Similar size country. 54 reactors. None have been affected by an EQ or tsunami. yes, old tech I think the doco said 1960's tech

So, that would work here. But use the 2018 tech that Gates Foundation designed and is about to test in China but Trump ended that, and its far far better than the old reactors in use globally. Despite their age they are safe, but factor in 20a8 tech its not only much much safer, they dont emit waste they use the waste

Watch the doco, Inside Bills Brain, last half of Part 3. These ones even run at atmospheric pressure, and not water cooled

Thats not correct. The EQ did not break the installation, nor the other 54. the tsunami did not break the installation, not the other 54. When power was cut off and thus the water cooling, the diesel generators were flooded, by what was poor design location, placing them at near sea level. had that not been the case there would be no nuclear news to report on that day, except that all 54b were unaffected. Bear in mind these are old reactors, and they were fine. This new one is exponentially better in all respects

How can we cease FF in a timely manner? We cannot. This is the opportunity.

Ok, if Kiwis are poor builders and engineers then maybe you are correct. If we did build one we wont build it, someone else will. But yes, nuclear has a bad name.

So does climate change. The end result is that we will burn FF for a very very long time. in 50 or 100 years there may be another way. I prefer a 50 to 100 year green transition not 100 years of FF till we find that other way

We are a very glass half empty country, or head in the sand

We, the older generations screwed up. If we haven't doomed ourselves, we've certainly caused mass extinctions of many faultless species, through our bickering and greed.

A nuclear plant located in any of the main islands and of shore island are at great risk from earthquake. A quake on the subduction zone will affect in a big way the whole of NZ. The Transalpine fault and the Hikurangi fault are overdue for a major event in the magnitude greater than 8 on the Richter scale. It would be extreme stupidity to locate even Bill Gates "safe" plant in NZ.

We are close to 90% green power without placing our children and grandchildren at more risk than we have already.

Generating electricity from fossil fuels using a modern turbine is about twice as efficient as an ICE in a car. Even allowing for losses through transmission lines and battery charging, there is still a net benefit.

Surely you would simply put such a project out to international tender to countries with appropriate expertise? I know that gets done sometimes - I worked for the UK company that built the Moa Point sewage treatment plant in Wellington.

Mostly south island - but they must all be old now as I think most of those projects were in the 60's and 70's were they not? I do not think many new ones have been built. There's geothermal round Rotovegas I think.
