Eating utensils can cause confusion - for instance, in a UK recipe, a tablespoon is about twice as big as the same word means in a NZ recipe!

in the UK they use gallons and in the US they also use gallons and they are a different measurement, oh no how will we ever cope.

a UK table spoon is 15ml, in NZ its 20ml, thats twice as big.

Is there a need for sarcasm in this thread?

totally because he seems to think everything should be as it is in the UK, when NZ is a completly different country and has its own standards

Is he not entitled to his own opinions just as you are to yours? It's not exactly an unreasonable thing he is suggesting surely?  Perhaps if it's bothering you so much, you could unsubscribe from the thread?

Sarcasm in written format isn't particularly clear to see for everyone.

totally, but pretty much everything thread of his, hes wanting things to be like they were/are in the UK. you move to a different country you kinda have to live with what ever set of units/standards they have adopted :)

Sure, I get that, my sister was much the same way when she got back, but from experience it goes away after a while, and even if it doesn't, your sarcasm and negative tone isn't likely to be the factor that changes his frame of mind, and just brings the thread down to a negative tone.

TOG values are based on the SI standard of R values and are all about how "well" the Duvet or underlay works. In New Zealand we say how heavy it is... that's stupid. Geektastic is correct, we need proper standards. Either R values or TOG values or whatever but not some stupid weight system that dodgy manufactures can use to dupe unsuspecting buyers

it may be stupid but thats what NZ has adopted, i did mention earlier that he could try and get them to change the standard used. but someone else pointed out it costs to test the TOG values and i highly doubt many of the manufactures would want to pick up that cost.

so unless something changes its just something we have to live with unfortunately, and we just have to be more diligent and conduct our own research into what will work best for us

And that's a problem... 20 is not twice as big as 15.

There is another problem too, a NZ standard table spoon is 15ml, it is Australia where it is 20ml.

You missed the sarcasm. Twice 15 should be 30, not 20. So I was pointing out that even the user replying didn't get it right.

I recall during days when I first left home. I opened a cook book and it called for 1 cubic cm of ginger. I was doing a maths and physics. I really made my flatmates (mature students which I'm very grateful to have flatted with!) ROTFL their AO

But can you really relate how 'well' that duvet of 9.5 TOG will work for you - will it be too cold, or too warm?
So you use experience to tell yu what you like.

Same with gm/m2 - you know roughly what you want in winter, so get that - or take it out of the pack and have a feel of it.

networkn: I'd suggest eating utensils would also cause serious digestion issues! :)

Is this not sarcasm too? :-)
