In Europe the warmth rating of duvets in measured in TOG numbers. Don't know what they are, but 13 would be warm winter and 5 would be summer.

Here they seem to have 'fill weight' rather than TOG. I can't find a scale to convert between the two - does anyone know where there is one?

pretty sure there is no way to do it, because you could have 500g/m2 of feathers and 500g/m2 of cotton and they would have a different TOG even though they have the same g/m2 measurement

we use a 250g/m2 cotton polyester blend in the spring/summer and summer/autumn, and 550g/m2 in the winter, its one of those ones that has 2 inners so you just remove one or add one if you want it thicker or thinner.

Huh.

As with emergency services numbers, this is one of those things (albeit a less serious one!) where it would be easier if the world agreed to use only one standard!

yes it would be, but its not so you just have to deal with it

there is no way to convert between the 2 because each material has a tog rating, and when you measure in g/m2 its not taking into account the tog of the material

I just want to go back to my nice warm duvet that conveniently had a label on the pack stating "Warm for Winter"...

You know what is really dumb?

90% of the duvets probably come out of the same factory - the ones heading to Europe have Tog labels and the ones heading here fill weight. One label with both measures on would solve the issue at a stroke and cut costs at the same time since only one label would be needed!

what issue is that? there is no issues for those born in NZ

the issue is when people come from the UK and Europe, and are used to one thing and expect to see the same thing that they are used to here.

The main reason NZ doesn't have Tog ratings has been the cost of testing.
There are so many different versions of Duvets in Nz
it amazes me the choice and number of different combinations.
Your needs depend on your house its insulation and where you live.
As a simplified rule the 2 part wool duvets with 200gm and 300gm inners that
you can button together or use in 2 covers have always been a good all round inner.
Feather and down is a whole different matter with many grades of down and feather used.
As with all things in NZ different grades of imported product are sold as the same thing
so it is hard to compare. Am sure my wife wrote a article on choosing inners some years ago will
try and find it and post if possible.

You will also find some with polyester which has a habit of making you sweat more and doest wick away moisture.
And in recent times Tencel fibre has been used and am trialing one at the moment and have been impressed
in a Dunedin Winter

To get around this we purchased a Duvet that has three separate Duvets that dome together, each is a different thinkness so we can mix and match depending on season etc

I have one duvet that I use year round.

In winter I throw an extra fleece blanket over it, in summer I lie on top of the duvet if I get too hot.
No idea what weight or filling is in it ..

Fairydown branded ones all have a warmth rating on them as well as the weight. Won't help to compare to TOG values, but would give a good indication.

EDIT: Like this

And vice versa.

Of course it makes sense to use standard units - otherwise we may as well start measuring distance in 'Pies' and temperature in "hats" or something. By your 'logic', as long as 4 million people understood what it meant it would be fine.

yep but we are in NZ and over here we have decided to use g/m2 for things like this, sorry. maybe if you were here when we were deciding on what to you you could have made a submission.

TOG is not and SI unit of measure so your bottom argument has no basis as a TOG is about as relevant as a g/m2 in the scheme of things.
