jarledb: The red peak has grown on me too. As Rowan points out, the other options are just too complex. And the red peak would stand out and be unique amongst other flags.

True, it's the more 'flag-like' of the options.  If it wasn't there as a choice I prolly would have voted on monkey-butt.

But does it need to be 'Red Peak'. Why not Green peak, or black or blue peak.  Green peak would match the country better with our clean green image. This whole process does make me wonder how poor the 28 million dollar process really was, if some design gets picked up by the media, and online voters, to get it on the referendum. It is pretty similar to Gareth Morgans design that he commissioned. That amount of money would have brought us 3 pandas to 3 NZ zoos :)

Great point.

I stuck them altogether and got this:

No reason at all why that couldn't be green also.

There is actually a thought process and reason behind all design elements of "red peak" (also known as "First to the Light") - it's worth a read http://aotearoaflag.tumblr.com/

Yes it needs to be red peak.  Symbolic of the coming thrusting rise of the socialist worker's movement, forcing it's way through the wrong white crowd, piercing the connection between black and blue.  Workers and peasants unite!

WyleECoyoteNZ: The inclusion of this 'Red Peak' flag really, really irks me.

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, but shouldn't you have to be of a voting age before signing a petition?

Effectively, this flag option has now made into the final list on the back of an online petition through social media which reports say up to 50,000 people signed. Great. Of those 50,000 people that signed the petition, how many will be eligible to vote come decision time?

Your response bemuses me.

Red Peak is simply is being included in the vote mix. If the majority of NZ agrees with you, it will die a death. So what's your issue?

And what's wrong with the young having their say? They'll outlive us on average and will have to live with the flat, so why not listen to their views?

Kiwi needs laser eyes and a stick figure riding a bike up the peak, then I think its spot on.

A thought process? Really?

Looks more like a copy and paste to me. I really find it hard to believe that some people feel it oozes with originality. Come on. Could we not have just come up with something a little better than some engineering firms logo lookalike?

Thanks for pointing this out. I oppose socialism. You just made my choice about this one so much easier.

We are at the point now I think where anything can be considered derivative of something already existing, if you look hard enough.

In the context of national flags, it's original.  Far more "original" IMO than cut and pasting various sports team logos.

Then don't vote for Red Peak, simple.

Personally, I think the silver fern options scream boring corporate logo - they look like they have been designed by a consensus group of accountants and bankers.

Ultimately, the majority will decide. I'll happily live with whatever the outcome.

Simple question for me. Are we after a flag or a brand logo?
Flags are long lasting. You rebrand every few years to move with the times.

The Silver fern options (Still unsure why there are two of them) look to most people more like feathers than ferns. Sure as Kiwis we all know that they are ferns, but to the rest of the world they scream feathers. IMO they are not a good choice. The Koru is probably the better, more original option out of all of them, but its black!

Its an easy choice from here on.

I'd rather have a referendum on the TPP and let Jonkey secretly choose a new flag for us.

Instead, he's doing it backwards. On purpose.
