I haven't kept up to date with it either, but as far as copyright violation charges go it seems to me he was just making it easier for others to break the law, but was he actually breaking the law himself? Not saying that what he did was right, but was was it illegal?

If I send something illegal via NZ post, is NZ post liable for the fact that I committed a crime?

In America why aren't gun shop owners held responsible for selling guns to mass shooters? Why aren't the legislators who make it so easy to get guns held accountable?

I don't know how naughty or not he's been, but I wonder if they went after him just because they stopped (I think) going after the end user in case the end user was a little old lady who doesn't know her VPN from her elbow.

However, even if they did, I have no doubt that their lawyers saw to it that the T&C's prohibited using the service for anything illegal.

Otherwise, we may as well start prosecuting car manufacturers for building vehicles that can be used for speeding or ram-raiding, baseball bat makers for making things that could be used as weapons and so on.....

Time Berners-Lee ought to be in the dock if we follow the Dotcom case 'logic' because he invented the internet and therefore must be responsible for everything people use it for....

I would be interested in watching some of it just for the look at the court process in action. That and I find it an interesting story of the crown against the defense and how they portray stuff and not how the media portray it.

I am still curious to know how the judge expects the content to be removed from the Internet when the hearing is over. Should there not be some kind of basic technical competency test to protect everyone from ridiculous court orders?

As I understand it (IANAL) the US want him for a bunch of copyright violations which they have a reasonable chance of having a case that will stand up in court (whether they would win or not is what courts are for deciding) BUT, those charges are not sufficient to have him extradited, as extradition requires a crime that in NZ would result in (I think) more than 2 years prison, and copyright crime in NZ isn't treated that harshly. So, the US have tacked on a pile of racketeering and organized crime-type charges, which meet the NZ standards to be eligible for extradition, but they will have a much trickier job of persuading a judge that there is a case to answer for them.

NZers are sick of this sideshow sucking oxygen out of things that matter.

haha you have to be joking, America has more prisoners per capita than any other country in the world. I've read countless stories of people sitting in jail for years without charge just wanting to be charged so they can post bail and get out of there.

America has a very corrupt and backwards prison system so much that Obama has acknowledged this himself and was even the first sitting president to visit a federal prison.

Don't believe look the story up on Vice.

The reasons behind his extradition are stupid, if they were legit they should also be taking Google and Dropbox to court for their file hosting platforms.

You don't have to like the man but every man deserves a fair trial and to be treated equally.

A Judge is a very qualified and experienced individual, they do not get their qualification from a cereal packet. If he/she makes an order Kim Dotcom has to be able to follow that order, therefore the onus is on KDC not the Judge.

If I were Dotcom I would forget about making a circus of it and start taking this serious.
