This will just drive more people to reshippers that arent govt owned like NZ Post are, I guess if amazon dont start to charge GST from Japan then I will have to find a reshipper there. UK doesnt bother me since they dont sell anything worth buying at a decent price.

I just ordered from Networkonair, they have a special on at the moment so even with VAT+Shipping it was cheaper than Amazon UK could have sold it for. Their loss. Was hoping the cut-off date would be end of Nov, still a few items in my Wish List. Oh well.

What happens if sellers just ignore our authorities and ship items to NZ without collecting GST? Doesn't that make it the buyer's problem?

All Amazon has to do is add another American state called  NZ and charge 15%.

Amazon JP removed Australia as a shippable location back in July and it still hasn't been reinstated . . . so I don't like the chances of NZ being added back in any time soon.

No.

The law changes are already discussed extensively in the other huge thread about these GST changes, and they make it clear the assumption by customs is that all goods under $1000 would have either had the GST paid by the seller if they are liable for paying GST.

Nobody will be pulled up by customs for goods under $1000.

I'd certainly vote for whoever promised to ban everything that you can get from a $2 shop. That stuff is such utter c**p it'd be better for everyone if it went directly from the factory to landfill. At least then it would avoid the round trip to New Zealand.

Amazon collects GST from purchases to NZ from their US site and has done for probably 10 years. They don't need to add another country.

That image refers to the US site, whereas this discussion is about the UK site. Amazon UK don't collect sales tax for the US.

Major players like Amazon are not going to get into a legal/political stoush over a market which is less than a rounding error. They will take the course of least resistance and simply remove the thorn and place us on the no go list.

Hey don't pick on my favourite shops! You can get some great stuff from $2 shops that other shops used to charge way more for.

I wonder what will happen to some pre-orders I have placed with the UK and JP website. I presume they will be cancelled now :(

Company A says "No."

Company A carry on selling to NZers, not collecting taxes.
