afe66: Name suppression of the parent is reasonable as the son is 35 yes old...

But the people themselves should be named once court case settled is my 2 cents even if convicted and discharged.

If it was my son, I would've got out ahead of the name suppression and said "My son is an adult. If he's a dick, then that's on him, not me."

Interim suppression is fair. When and if they are charged, then then don't deserve any suppression, as its now a fact. If I was arrested for robbing a bank but it wasn't me, I'd want suppression

What's the difference between an arrest and a charge? It's an allegation, nothing is proven.

Good advice from Patrick Smellie: https://businessdesk.co.nz/article/opinion/free-advice-for-the-wanaka-wanderers?fbclid=IwAR0MBID6zI2A-0o5T_DD8KZChcBRxL9P5lX0YN-lY_bRe_D9PpkMpbf-kBg

He's being generous to suggest that Auckland's sympathy towards them would be merely "in short supply" though. More like "Cheerfully rip your arm off and beat you to death with the wet end".

"The couple accused of flouting Covid-19 laws by fleeing Auckland for a family holiday home in a South Island resort town are said to be "remorseful" and know there will be consequences for their "bad decision".

But a friend says the vitriol they are facing - and death threats - as a result of their alleged breach of national Covid-19 rules are out of order and affecting them deeply."

Then they need to drop the suppression and publicly front this.. The online rage exists partially because they are getting a QC to hide their identities,   and the longer the suppression continues the more social media $hit will flow their way..

The way to confront this is by owning it and agreeing to accept any charges that may be coming their way.. and they will find the story will blow over in a day or two... by playing lawyer games you just draw it out...

Edit: They are living breathing examples of the Streisand Effect,

Im not a lawyer or a prosecutor. Either way, its not proven or a fact. But yes, charged is not a fact, my bad. Should have said convicted.

Not sure if this "friend" is making it better or worse... The entitlement to say "oh but we didn't think of the consequences".

I guess depending on where your moral compass lays it might not appear wrong until someone sensible reminds you.

Yep, as per everyone else. Get the keynotes, "mistake", "remorseful" "I will learn from this"

I agree fully, BUT, until they are convicted, i.e, proven (thanks @Handle9) its speculation. Yes, we all know the "facts" but its important to give them the innocent till proven guilty first. Then, the daggers can come out. Otherwise, it may as well be the medieval times. Its 2021 not 1421

I agree with the general sentiments, but you need to take account of the Rule of Law. As  posted earlier, if I was arrested with robbing a bank, and I was innocent, I would want suppression, for obvious reasons.

I don't get people's outrage here. I agree they did something very wrong, I think they should have the book thrown at them, but instead of getting pissy at people for applying for name suppression, get pissy at lawmakers who allow it. A long as people have had more money than others, there has been equality. So long as the judge doesn't treat them any differently than they would any other citizen, then I'm fine. There will be guidelines on the punishment, assuming those are followed, people shouldn't complain.

It's just another form of outrage at big companies that pay little to no tax. So long as they are operating under the letter of the law, the only people that should be getting negative attention are those who decided the laws as they stand now, are what they should be.

What could they say that would satisfy you? Ultimately, regardless of whether it's true or not, you'd pretty much expect the same phrases.

Some people are dicks and never learn, others learn from their mistakes. Both would likely say the same thing. You can't tar people with a brush without knowledge of the longer-term outcome.

How long do you think it takes people to see said sons name and figure out who his parents are?

Not much point in suppressing one without the other.

So long as the person who (if they did indeed commit said offense) is punished within the guidelines of the law, that should be the end of it.

This whole trial by social media thing is silly.
