The headline contains a quote from the victim in relation to the offender's sentencing. Here's the quote in full:

Reid’s victim said she thought he suffered from a “generational anger”, forgave him, and said she didn’t want him to go to jail.

It's an epic trollworthy headline. The article does not make that case in the least.

The headline takes a quote completely out of context and applies it to a different subject.

The headline should be changed.

Wombat1: Nothing about the 3 victims. It makes me angry reading this style of reporting, and I am left wondering if this is not part of the bigger problems at the moment. Sorry I read the article. What disrespect to the families of those poor victims. Shame on you stuff. Let me just leave it there.

Maybe it was too much about one of the victims. There were 12 others involved.

Deaths : 3 (including the perpetrator) Injured : 10

and there's probably a good reason the media is quiet about the victims for the moment. Family members of the deceased must be informed first and could easily be in hard to reach places. The police have interviews to complete and people to contact. The injured victims probably don't need a circus at this point either.

I actually meant the 2 dead victims and the injured police officer.

This US cartoon (Washington Post editorial, 21 July 2023) was critical of America's apparent indifference to mass shootings.  It implies no criticism of New Zealand.

In the United States, a mass shooting is defined as an incident in which three or more people, excluding the perpetrator(s), are shot in one location at roughly the same time.

Mass killings have a similar definition.

Until now, the last NZ shooting to match this definition was in Christchurch in 2019.

In the first 6 months of 2023, more than 300 mass shootings and 30 mass killings have been recorded in the US.

EDIT:   wiki - List of massacres in New Zealand - 1772 to 2023

quite right.

often the public are rather unkind to victims, they will do crap like drive by the victims house at all hours of the day and night. they get relatives they havn't seen in 30 years turning up. its really hard on victims.

Why are we so obsessed with comparing ourselves to the worlds worst when it comes to this? Is it to try and make us feel better? Mass shootings were unheard of in NZ 5 years ago.

It is you obsessing about an American comparison of themselves.

Edit: For those born yesterday 30 years ago the 1990s were particularly bad for mass killings in NZ with 6 cases involving 5 - 14 victims.

incorrect. there has been many mass shootings before then. but because they didn't use black evil military based firearm, none of the self interest groups got their knickers in a bunch and campaigned on it.

there was one that used a standard hunting rifle, and even the police commented that its sad that it would be soon forgotten about. which clearly has happened as you don't remember it. people don't care unless they have their own agenda and go stir the public up to generate support.

Another case of selective memory. What about the Aramoana killing involving an AK style semi auto?

"After the shootings, sweeping changes were made to New Zealand's firearms legislation in 1992, including 10-year photographic licences and tight restrictions on military style semi-automatic firearms."

The criminals have the guns and the decent citizens handed theirs in at amnesty time. So much for virtue signalling in banning guns. Gangs will always have their arsenals because weapons in the hands of the criminals can’t ever be controlled.

The breakdown of society, fractured families, poverty, soft punishment and little deprivation after committing any crime is encouraging the perpetuation of anything goes.

A mass exodus is going to be the result because this country has become unrecognisable. Smart Australia opened its doors and made it easy to move there for Kiwis while deporting the unwanted back here for us to cower from.

Personally I've never knowingly heard a pump action shotgun before. The shots in this video did sound like shotgun fire to me initially. I count eight in three seconds. A pump action shotgun is capable of this rate of fire without modification.

Other videos of the same event recorded outside the concrete cavern known as QE2 Square don't sound like that at all.
