An incident is in progress downtown Auckland.

https://i.stuff.co.nz/auckland/300931378/live-multiple-shots-fired-witnesses-describe-gunmen-in-auckland-cbd

Consider avoiding the lower downtown area if you are not at work yet. My understanding is some building managers are preventing access while this incident is in progress.

It's winding down. One cordon in place, but otherwise commuters free to move now.

Herald live feed mentioned some ferries were cancelled. Presumably those will start running again.

Ferries have been dropping passengers off, at least in the last half hour. Passengers diverted away from the cordoned area. TVNZ has had pretty good footage.

It seems some ferries returned to previous terminals, and some dropped off passengers at alternative docks in the CBD. Normal ferry terminal in town is directly opposite the building where this event has occurred.

PM has said the guy had no political or ideological motivation.  I'm not sure how they know that.

MikeAqua: PM has said the guy had no political or ideological motivation.

I don't see any direct quote from the PM except saying there is no indication of the above. Some other statement saying there is no national security risk.

Coster said police searched a number of locations following the events to determine there were no additional victims in those locations. Presumably a search of the offenders home and other locations known to the offender. I'd assume enough information was established in the course of those visits to understand something of the circumstances.

Fair comment he did say there was no indication.  As you said, maybe they found something, e.g. a note.  Or the suspect was related to the construction site in some obvious way.

I guess we'll find out motive in time.  Or maybe not.  The FBI never figured out what motivated that shooter in Vegas in 2017.

Offender identified and named previously convicted of family violence

https://i.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/300931632/identity-of-auckland-cbd-shooter-revealed-was-on-home-detention-for-domestic-violence-charges

Offender was on some kind of home detention with work release. The statement from police above indicates the motive involved events at the worksite.

Not really a discussion for now I guess but what is actually the point of home detention for violent criminals if they can still get hold of a gun and go out?

The offense this person was convicted and sentenced for did not involve firearms.

I see one of the convictions was "impeding breathing". There is a recent law change providing a maximum sentence of seven years for "strangulation":

The reason for that given by the - Law Commission: "strangulation is a common and particularly harmful form of family violence. A victim of family violence who is strangled has a much greater risk of a future fatal attack by the perpetrator than a victim who was not strangled. The Commission found the risks following strangulation were not well understood by police, judges and others who assist victims of family violence".

It appears to me the offender was not charged with that particular offense for some reason. I can guess there was some technical reason but it's definitely a question I have about that sentence.

The reports are that this was the offenders workplace which he had permission to go to.

It appears a fairly “normal” motivation from the offender rather than ideological. The reports are that this was their workplace.

Strangulation is something quite specific, where as impeding breathing is a broader term.  If you sat on my chest, you would likely impede my breathing, but you wouldn't be strangling me.
