@Wombat1 Replace "serving us for years" with selling to us for years they don't do it out of altruism they do it for profit. They do not contribute to taxes as other businesses are required to do so. They use our infrastructure and government services but do not contribute to their cost. Why should they be exempt and given this unfair advantage.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Wow lots of resentment here for a company that has been serving us for years, makes great food at great prices both in NZ and here in Aus. I find it odd that people wish more tax on certain companies and individuals to be honest, especially individuals that have generally worked hard to be where they are.

I think some of the "they don't pay tax" people are confused as to what it means. Charitable organisations still pay GST and their employees still pay income tax (PAYE).

They don't pay tax on their profits, but there are strict restrictions on what that income can be used for. Note:

"The charity's purpose and activities must be fully charitable" and "None of the charity's income can be used or available to benefit any of its members, trustees or associates."

Discovered Australian "Mighty Mite" a few years ago after a trip to Australia. Gluten free and tastes great to me. Only downside is you have to buy it there and bring it back.

Mighty Mite is made by Three Threes Condiments Pty Ltd which is also a not-for-profit organisation here in Aus.

There probably more to this than what you see in media.

An educated guess is that I reckon the supplier of the said brand has had enough of the retailers demands, requirement and behaviour.

everyone knows you don’t get a bargain when supplying the warehouse……sooo many demands and you are pretty much bleeding cash and profit trying to sell and service to them on their terms.

(no I don’t supply the warehouse but have a solid understanding of the FMCG industry)

You think The Warehouse has more demands or influence on grocery suppliers that the big 2? They area an absolute minnow and would be begging for the scraps let over from the other 2.

You would be surprised. They ain’t as small as you think.
They operate like the big guns because they are big guns.

You have to remember that one of the big guns was a part owner not so many years back…

One possibility I haven't seen mentioned (apologies if I missed it) is that the major supermarkets probably have contracts that guarantee their supply, leaving the smaller players to get cut off if there is a shortage.

Our Mate (UK Marmite)> Vegemite > Any other mite > Actual axle grease > NZ Marmite

PS: Sanitarium is a big juicy target, but we shouldn't just be picking on them.. It's time to end religious tax breaks in their entirety and tighten up the charities rules in general.

It's a complex, highly subjective issue and nowhere near as easy as saying let's just tax them.  i.e. I would desperately love to to see Destiny Church (Brian Tamaki etc) taxed up the wazoo, but equally I would hate for The Salvation Army to pay any tax.

So who decides?  Does some politician sit there and decide which charities are 'real' and which do/don't pay tax?  What if the Govt changes and the goal posts move? Does it become a political football complicated with Christian politicians like Luxon, or others who are atheist.

I am a firm believer that if your business sells to other businesses or the general public then your earnings should be taxed.
Take religion out of the equation and just tax them.

I would include Salvation Army shops and Hospice Shops and all the other businesses that sell goods and services.
Don't tax donations - just tax sales. Easy.

The purpose of not-for-profits is, as the name suggests, not to make money! A lot of people here seem to be out of touch with how NFP's work, comments about they need to be taxed on their earnings, NFP's don't pay tax on their profits etc. What is really being debated here? If there are "profits" then they should not be listed as a NFP. Is that not the real issue here?

Reading this thread, I'm beginning to think Marmitism is a religion.

What do you expect from a company that not only avoids tax, but also plagiarises well known British brand names, and then sues anyone who tries to import the authentic item?

The Warehouse should take a moral stand and refuse to stock their products.

They don't plagiarise it actually, they licensed the name. And the British Marmite is available in stores as "Our Mate" - the manufacturer has a different name for it in Aus/NZ so that they don't run afould of their trademark license to Sanitarium.

Marmite is the devil's food or at least his/her axle grease

Oh dear, I fear a Marmite vs Vegemite* battle incoming! 😁

I baulk at the notion that the government should intervene in commercial arrangements in a “command economy” kind of way. Very Muldoon-ist.

* Vegemite for me (Getting my off-topic vote in early).

There's only one true Marmite.

And it ain't the one from New Zealand.

Real Marmite from the UK,please.

mattwnz: But the Government should have done far more than just appoint a grocery commissioner.

What exactly did you want them to do?

They should grow a pair and actually split the supermarkets up into four competing chains.

Plus give ComCom some real teeth with commissioners not afraid to use their powers.
