Also had that confusing thing of being given a physical card in store last month to replace, and told ' don't have to do anything' but obviously isn't linked to existing account or rewards voucher.

Seems to be no way link that card I was given to my account in the app, only option is to request a new card from within the app.

when i was given a card instore, they scanned both the old card and the new card in a single transaction. the new one ended up linked to my old account. actually, didn't have to do anything.

that should be standard practice, but don't know if it is.

ah that might be the case, when I logged in to the account settings today my account number matched the physical card number . thanks.

Same experience of given a new card which was scanned after my Smartfuel (aka AA card) was swiped.  Checkout operator was pretty vague other than "hold onto it until 1st of February" but was probably the 'x' hundredth person she'd told that day.  I then received an email from Woolworths recently with both my name and new card number quoted and said if the card number matches that in the email then good to go, any points balance would be carried over on 1 February.

Didn't bother investigating it any further as barely visit Woolworths but did use it for the first time yesterday.  Went to swipe it then realised no magnetic strip so played the too close, too far from the barcode scanner to read it game.

So, in the checkout line.  The person in front waits till their checkout is nearly completed and gets their phone out.  Scratches around for a couple of minutes finding the app, presents it to the scanner.  Then scratches around for another minute getting rid of the app and finding their credit card app. Pays the bill and then decides to load their bags in their trolley.  Really efficient system to replace two cards in your wallet.

One has to be financially iliterate to buy stuff just for the sake of boosted points etc. I think Woolworths just thinks most consumers are dumb enough to fall for it.

Several people I know do exactly this ("we've got to get X from Y this week to get points!") so it's working as intended.

The person they had helping people out at the local Countdown said the old and new accounts would be linked via the email address when you signed up, so at least in theory it should work out.

Hopefully some of the features that they have in the AU version of the program make it across the ditch:

  • Apple Wallet NFC capability - Basically just open your watch or iphone wallet, select the card and tap the EFTPOS machine. I assume Android capability exists.
  • Everyday Pay - basically you just scan a QR code on the eftpos terminal, it registers your everyday card AND charges it to your linked credit card.
  • Everyday Plus - 2x earning, plus 10% off a shop every month.
  • Everyday Mobile - also gives you a 10% off a shop every month
  • Linkage to a frequent flyer program (I convert all my points over to Qantas rather than take the everyday credit)

Or print out the bar codes  QR codes, laminate and put in wallet. It is exactly the same issue with the warehouse market, where you get big holdup when they ask the customer if they have the market app installed to get a discount.

Does the NZ version have the boost all button?

I go into both apps once a week (Everyday for Woolworths, flybuys for Coles), hit boost all. If I happen to purchase a boosted product, it’s more of a coincidence (eg. Price, quantity, quality etc) than a planned strategy.

neb: Interesting, has anyone requested and received a physical card, rather than getting one via the initial trade-in? So far it's zero for two.

I ordered one early when I was told it was coming and to preorder, it arrived before the launch

It does, yes. But I don't understand why they can't just auto enable them like they did before?

I just have the app ready to use if I'm not doing a click and collect, and then use apple pay on my phone which doesn't require me to open an app, just hold it by the reader and authorise

Most of my shops are click and collect. But if new one works like old one can scan the rewards card while they are scanning grocery’s. They have a scanner on customers side.

As above Apple Pay don’t have to open Applic, I just double tap side button, and hold phone near payment terminal.

I guess though there will always be some people that wait til last moment to get phone out, etc.

Gamification - its to get you more 'invested' in purchasing products for 'points'.

One thing that I love over here (not in the Everyday app, its in the Woolworths app though) is the scan & go capability... can really zip through the supermarket and skip the queues.

They are ending it. Also was only in North Island.

PAK’nSAVE has Shop’n GO though which works good, and is in both Islands.
