If Chuck Norris were bitten my a zombie it would destroy all other zombies (much like Neo and the final battle in The Matrix) - Chuck would be our only hope!

In the event of the zombification of the NZ mainland, I'd steal a plane with sufficient range to get me where the zombies are not, Norfolk or the Chathams probably.

It's been a while since I've done any flying, but I reckon with zombies chasing me it'd all come back pretty quick.

particularly against traditional zombies, you'd want to construct flamethrowers, and make sure you have plenty of shotgun goodness.

Shotguns yes - flamethrowers, no. Its a well known fact that Zombies smell awful when on fire!

hand to hand I'd have a couple of Katanas or similarly easily wielded swords, not for use dual handed, but in case you get one stuck in a zombie skull or similar and had to pull another one out.

I'd stay away from the Katanas. When it comes to Zombie defense one of the critical mistakes that people make is to be too creative with their weaponry choices (note Dawn of the Dead when the girl accidentally gets carved up with the chainsaw).

So, I'd go with a good auto shottie, a good rifle with scope, and maybe a good blunt object like a baseball bat for hand to hand - less chance of collateral damage!

meesham: The other thing you need to worry about apart from the zombies are other survivors, will they want to join you and help defend against the zombies or try to take your supplies and weapons to save themselves?

i love the armoury ideas you guys are coming up with... but what about the ole petrol lawnmower(ala braindead), easily accesible easy to run .. not too easy to kill your friends with

I've been thinking about how to survive a zombie apocalypse for some time, and I think the classic mistake in most films is that the survivors tend to want to get somewhere else.

Ideally, you'd want to set up a base somewhere. It'll have easy to manage and minimal entry points, solid ground structure and be easy to fortify. Essential characteristics of the base would be a large flat roof or a sunny artirum in which glasshouses and gardens could be set up, and water collection would be possible. It would also be good to have 360 degree views, preferably with high balconies from which to defend from on high.

You'd also want to set up an entry and exit procedure, both for raiding / scouting parties on foot, and for trucks - preferably a two gate system, open one gate, let the friendlies get in, close it, kill any zombies that came in as well, then open the 2nd gate.

You'd want inspections of any friendly entering the base for bites. Depending on the amount of time it takes for zombification to take hold, a temporary quarantine or holding cell on entry would be good. If we learnt anything from zombie films, it is that people tend to hide bites, thinking that they will be the one person who doesn't become a zombie. They enter the safe area, and boom... everyone get it, as the base is set up to defend from outside, not inside.

Of course, all of this goes out the window if we are in a Romero zombie apocalypse, as in his films, as soon as you die, no matter how, you turn in a zombie.

if it were the romero scenario, you would have to have individualy secured housing with limited population in each one so that any one person dying doesnt destroy the entire community

Regarding weapons, for firearms, shot guns would be best. Mainly for the partial reuse of the shots. If sufficient shots and powder could be found, and the necessary tools to load the shots, the cases could be saved after attacks and reloaded.

As it would be primarily defence, testing should be carried out to find the optimal powder to shot ratio for the defensive area in an attempt to preserve as much of the supplies as possible. There is no use in loading too much powder as you'll be only shooting zombies as a specific range.

Markers should be set up in the areas that zombies will attack marking the optimal distance for the shots to work most effectively. Defenders will be instructed to not aim beyond those markers.

Lol, I would have free moving clothing (zombies can't run), a semi automatic rifle (303 or 308) and a .22 rifle for backup

I don't think the .22 rifle is going to be any good - A .22 just doesn't have the stopping power against the undead

Personally, I'd be looking at some biker leathers. That should allow you some freedom of movement while being protection against teeth and claws. I'm always surprised at the amount of skin that people in zombie movies show... Some guy's always getting pounced and bitten.

Definitely don't go for a 22. You have to be accurate to be lethal with one of those, and a chest shot just ain't gonna work against the undead!
