freitasm: It should've been trimmed ages ago. We took down a tree when it got a meter from our power and fibre.

I meant more that the fibre shouldn't have been tacked onto the lower part of a power pole but run along (under) the ground. The less above-ground stuff you can manage, the better.

Edited to add: Not blaming the OP but the people who installed it.

We have a similar type of issue. Our older wooded fence is being buffeted and moved by the wind, I will need to replace sections of it.

But what to do about the neighbor's fibre conduit that is tacked along the fence about a third up from the base.

I agree. My old copper line is underground and I wish they had installed fibre underground

heavenlywild: Wind has really picked up! ... Can't wait to have moments of quietness without the wind... except with kids screaming. ...

I heard kids playing outside this afternoon, before it got rough again towards the evening. I guess they were happy to be outside with no rain? 😋

With much of the thinking the storm might maul North, Auckland, Corromandel and then spin off to sea ?

The widespread depth of disaster across rest of coastal North Island seems to have been unexpected.
With storm hanging around.

Hawkes Bay, Naper and Hastings, Gisborne and all up the coast, probably too many places for news to keep up with.
Especially as communications knocked out all over the cut off communities.
Lots of houses flooded, so future of some subdivisions may be in question there.
Forestry slash makes its unwelcome appearance.
Parts may be without power for considerable time due a major substation being submerged in the flood.

Disaster management and communications around New Zealand might get a shake up.
Not sure if radio was doing its thing in those areas, when cellular and internet down.

NZDF could put in a case to buy more helicopters for the future.

I'm pretty sure most of the radio stations were still up and running, some probably on backup generators.

The rain has eased a lot tonight, mostly just drizzle/spitting now. Still breezy on and off, but not nearly as gusty as last night or even earlier today.

Wow. So calm where I am in Auckland right now. Sunshine, blue skies. I had a feeling last night as the sun went down and I could see streaks of red.

Yeah, like @networkn I have woken up to summer.

There's no wind, sun is shining and cicadas are in full voice.

Quite surreal.

Its quite cloudy above Titirangi but its fast moving cloud, air is quite still though at ground level with a gentle breeze.. some blue inbetween the cloud... agree is surreal compared to the last few days... I feel we are lucky to get away without damage, especially my WFH cabin as this type of csontruction can often lose their roofs due to lack of ties in the walls if the storm bracing fails.

We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to have been spared the misery so many people have faced and will continue to face in the coming months. We didn't lose power, damage was minimal, no injuries and our cleanup will be quick.

If you are in Auckland, I have 2 station wagons with towbars, or if you need a few hours of help with cleanup, let me know, my family and I are happy to help if we can (weekend), even if it's just picking up groceries or something similar. Or if you just need your kids taken off your hands for a few hours, we can take them out and amuse them or whatever you can think of.

Warning: I am not a DIY'r so whilst I am totally willing to help, if you provide me with a hammer or power tools, it's at your peril ;)

We had minor flooding in garage again, and tiny amount work its way into our ensuite, but thats being stripped out soon anyway so will assess it then.

Some rough plans made for changes around the property to help avoid issues in the future.

But end of the day, we came out with very little to worry about, watching news after the last event and this one........

Oh, and for those interested in what happened with our in ground vinyl pool, finally got someone out to assess it and he said its stuffed. Will need complete rebuild and new vinyl.

He said technically we could clean it out and use it, but wont look fantastic and probably get a lot worse.

Homes on slips seems to be a very common occurrence in NZ, one wonders if it has more to do with the geology of the hills or ground they built on. For instance here in Aus the hills are mostly rock, whereas in NZ its sand which just turns to mud in the rain. We hardly get any slips here, let alone houses going down hills. Perhaps instead of blaming this on climate change it may be better to blame put the blame on councils for allowing houses to be built in such bad places, and on mud.

I get it that a cyclone is a different event, but when I lived in Wellington slips were always a common occurrence after the rain. Mostly unheard of here.
