@freitasm enjoy the family time.

I’m back to work tomorrow. Mrs Handle and I didn’t get any physical Christmas presents this year, we spent a ton of money on our holiday instead and I’ve got no regrets. It was a precious time with the family in great cities.

I’m going back to work with a big smile.

No long trips for us. A new roof and whole house painting used up all the money. Perhaps this should be in the [Annoy] thread.

@freitasm I grew up living at 2 Airlie Road in the 1950's and '60s, across the road from the house on the corner where your first two photos were taken. We left there for Auckland when I was eleven. That view looking across the harbour from the bottom of Airlie Road is etched in my mind and brings back massive wonderful happy memories. In those days the area was known as Karehana Bay but that name seems to have slipped into disuse and it's now just lumped in with Plim.

My Dad was heavily involved in the boat club and I learned to sail my P class there when I was pretty small. The original house on that corner of Airlie and Moana was owned by an older couple who were good friends with my parents and we spent a lot time in their house, looking out at that view.

My feelings about the area are so strong that I think about it frequently and have often felt I would like to go back and live there.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Yes, have been back a few times over the years. TBH it doesn’t look a lot different to me - apart from new houses all along the waterfront.

I was last there in 2020 when I had arranged to meet with the Boating Club people. Our family was close friends with Eric Heath and his family who lived up in Motuhara Road. Eric was an artist and long-term cartoonist for The Dominion newspaper back in the day. Around 1960 for fun he painted this quick picture with old house paint on a piece of hardboard. He gave it to my parents and I inherited it. It got a bit battered over the years.

You can see the red roof of the original house on the corner of Airlie/Moana.

Despite my affection for the area I knew that when I have gone, the painting will just be chucked out because it doesn’t mean much to anyone else and it doesn't have great artistic merit. I also knew that the Club was collecting memorabilia for their upcoming centenary, so I contacted them with a photo and then visited to hand it over.

By coincidence they already had a pen and watercolor sketch of the Club done by Eric around the same time.

Everyone called that well-known little shop ‘Aunty Mary’s Dairy’. She was renowned for her large ice creams - unlike the other local dairy which was referred to as ‘Scrooge’s’.

The painting was originally unsigned but in 2020, before I donated it to PBC, I was able to get Eric’s signature on it. Did this by tracking down younger members of his family, who I knew back in the Plim days but with whom I had lost contact 60 years ago. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to meet up with him but they organised the signing.

The re-establishing of contact with his family after all that time was a blast in itself.

The reason I was keen to get it signed was not because I thought it would give it any value. Even signed I don’t believe it has any real commercial value. I did it because I thought the painting would be more meaningful to anyone looking at it at PBC - Eric still has one of the better-known signatures in the wider Wellington area (albeit now in an older demographic) due to his cartooning in The Dominion.
