No Time to Die - 7/10 VMAX Tauranga South Event Cinema's

I had such very high hopes for this movie and Daniel Craigs last outing as James Bond 007 but was let down just slightly.

- overly long which they have only just managed to stitch together
- Rami Malek is not one of the franchises best villains. He just did not appear menacing enough (nor tall enough). No good catch lines either (e.g. "No Mr Bond I expect you to die" or "You always were a cunning linguist, James'.")
- Hans Zimmer's soundtrack had heavy shades of Batman Begins in it - very noticeable.
- to many references and nods to previous Bond movies that made it look like this was going to be the very last James Bond movie. Even though right at the end of the credits it states "James Bond will return".
- Then we have the 007 moniker confusingly swapped about
- though there was humour, it was not upto previous standards
- I did appreciate Ben Whishaw's (Q) nod to his characters and his real life husband - nice touch
- I also appreciated that they have moved on, with all of Daniels Craigs Bond Movies, from the misogynistic Bond of past movies.

Overall I did enjoy it but it did lack a certain 'je ne sais quoi'. However I will be buying the Blue-ray when it is released to add to my entire Bond collection.

Oh forgot - The watch EMP (electro magnetic pulse) that took out the bionic eye and the villains lairs cameras, why did it not take out Bond's & 007 audio ear piece ?

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Q did warn he wasn't sure about the power so perhaps it was just enough to bring down electronics on a five cms radius?

Dare I mention I watched The Shawshank Redemption last night..

Bought the 4K bluray and to me it looked terrific.

No Time To Die

Decidedly average as Bond films go. Had some good moments but overall it lacked pace and action.

I'm worried that the next one might be the end of Bond for me.

I wondered about that too. I also wondered why he went through tunnels and up a ladder to the control room the first time but the second time went across the courtyard.

But then, why am I concerned about such details for a guy that can cause mayhem everywhere he goes but never has to do any paperwork.

I agree with your rating - bond is always enjoyable in a 'bish bash boom' way .

Craigs Bond has been very different to the previous Bonds and his last outing was no exception. I enjoyed it and am also looking forward to the new Bond. By going with sequential plots in the Craig films they had painted themselves into a corner.

Compared to other Bond send off films it was very good. It certainly wasn’t god awful like Die Another Day or A View to a Kill.

Watched "The Favourite" last night on Disney+

Outstanding and delightfully bonkers film, and I now understand the Oscar win for Olivia Coleman.

Watched Bad Times at the El Royale last night (available now on Disney+) and it's a good take on noir/thriller. Give it a 7.5/10.

Dune. Never read the books, or watched any previous film or TV versions. I was bored through the entire thing. I didn't find the "hero" at all captivating or interesting, and no other character got much development. Rebecca Ferguson's character provided a fair bit of exposition, and it didn't help that she spoke nearly all her lines in a quiet whisper and you couldn't make out 90% of what she was saying.

In theory, this is exactly the sort of movie I should like; but instead I was constantly checking my watch and it felt every bit as long as it's 155 minute runtime.

5/10

I'm currently watching Foundation on Apple TV+, and am enjoying that WAY more.

This is one of the best things I have ever read about Bond...and so true!

If you're enjoying Foundation more than Dune, then Dune must be bad. I am really struggling with Foundation, but I'll save the critique for the TV thread.

Infinite on Neon (Mark Wahlberg) 5/10

I knew this would be bad before I started watching it but felt the need to watch it anyway. Maybe it's because I'm trying to recapture some of the feeling I had watching Highlander multiple times in my youth (not to mention listening to the soundtrack and running around chopping off people's heads irl). Infinite had some potential but is completely forgettable in every aspect. Not to say it's completely bad, I did sit through the whole thing but still, meh.

Maybe my tastes in movies have changed as I find I'm not enjoying action flicks any more. Maybe I'm being too critical of the massive plot holes they all seem to have, or maybe I'm just used to action these days, big explosions don't do it for me anymore.

Six Bullets on Netflix (Jean Claude Van Damme and Joe Flannigan)  3/10

This caught my eye as I was browsing Netflix. The movie was released back in 2012 but I was curious to see what Joe Flannigan was up to post-Stargate Atlantis days and also to see how JCVD is holding up these days (or 9 years ago when the movie was made)

It didn't really interest me and I skimmed big parts of it. What struck me is somehow it had a very, very made-for-TV feel to the production. I can't place what it was - maybe it was the camera angles or something definitely felt small screen, along the lines of Burn Notice, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, maybe even the old A Team feel.

Logan Lucky on FTA TV   6.8 /10

Southern American accents annoy me...a lot. I don't know why, it just does. Hence why I've never really watched Logan Lucky despite the stellar cast. It was on free to air the other night and nothing else was on so I watched it.

Once I adjusted to the accents it wasn't too bad. It's been referred to as Oceans 7-11 which I find it quite a fitting description. Fine performances all round including Daniel Craig in a very different role to suave Bond role.

The plot probably wasn't as tight as an Oceans movie and some bits didn't make sense but an interesting plot overall and I could think of a worse way to kill a couple of hours (watching the previous movies for example)

I rewatched this last night and enjoyed it even more. Good performances from Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz as well.

A lot of it is fiction though. There is no evidence Queen Anne was a lesbian or that she kept rabbits in her apartments. And, for the most part, the film makes her out to be pretty average as a monarch when in fact this was not the case.

I know I'm being a pedant, but does Yellowstone's Teeter count as Southern American?  The show says she is from Texas, but the Ewings didn't speak like that.
