Handsomedan:

Just watched Prey on Disney+

It's a good action movie.

I'd say it's one of the better Predator-franchise movies. It's got a great cast, decent storyline and there's the obligatory Predator in the middle of it all. I like that the Predator was slightly less technologically advanced than the 20th/21st Century versions - but was still on the technological curve up and away from humankind. Gave it a sense of being appropriate for the time (1700's).

7/10 for me

Yeah, they got the balance right, a bit less technology certainly suited it for 1719.

Samaritan on Prime Video. Certainly not unwatchable.

7.5/10

Hmmm yes but I'd give it a 6/10

I concur.

Good but not great.

Thor: Love & Thunder.

Thor: Ragnarok was an excellent Fantasy/Super-hero movie with comedic elements.

L&T is an uneven comedy film in a Fantasy setting.

Bits of it worked, much of it didn't.

Positive? Christian Bale seemed like he was having fun and I loved the B&W/Colour action sequence - that looked great.

Negative? Seemed like it was trying to hard, much of the humour fell flat for my tastes and it was too relentlessly goofy IMHO.

Probably the weakest Taika W movie I have seen but whiled away 2 hours I suppose. Don't think I will be watching this one again.

Dune - Part 1 7/10

As you would expect from Denis Villeneuve a slick, technically brilliant movie but I've always found this story to be uninvolving. I don't really care what happens to the characters so it doesn't have the impact of say Blade Runner 2049 for me.

Matrix 4 6/10

As you would expect nowhere near as good as the first episode (but then neither were the next two) but a few innovations and a harmless way to spend a couple of hours.

Terminator Dark Fate 6/10

Same comments as Matrix 4 really but I find it hard not to like Arnie no matter what he's doing.

All 3 movies have jaw dropping CGI. How did we ever live without it?

That made me smile, and made me realise how much I like Arnie.  He's not the greatest actor in the world, and could even be considered to be a bit cheesy at times, but he is nearly always the perfect person for the roles he plays.  I have always thought his heart was in the right place, and despite being a Republican — who managed to get elected as Governor to California for eight years, despite that State's liberal leanings — he was very vocal about Trump saying he will 'go down in history as the worst President ever.

Have always enjoyed Dune. I have all books and the original 1984 & 2021 movies. I look forward to the next 2023 movie in this series. As you say the CGI is fantastic. Even what CGI they used in the 1984 movie was still good.

However - I have recently acquired the 2000 Dune and 2003 Children of Dune, a 3 part each mini series made for TV. The green or blue screen was appalling, which apart from internal shots, was most of the viewing. (film on film mostly). Then there was the acting - William Hurt was just very average, probably due to the fact he was acting in front of, well, nothing and therefore had no frame of reference. The costumes were school amateur hour. The internal sets were mostly ok. I did not watch each series in their entirety as I was so turned off by it all.

The 1975-77 Space:1999 series was way superior in everything compared to these two Dune attempts.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

3000 Years of Longing is a much different movie than I was expecting to see, based on the trailer, but I really enjoyed it.

Reminiscence - 5/10 DVD

Sort of sci-fi thriller starring Hugh Jackman who, for a change. is pretty awful. People are able to relive their memories and he uses it to try and track down someone he has fallen in love with.

Annihilation - 6.5/10 DVD

Natalie Portman stars and Alex Garland directs an interesting sci-fi story about investigating a strange anomaly that appears where investigators enter but never return.

The Night House - 6.5/10 DVD

Rebecca Hall stars in a reasonably creepy sort of ghost story which peters out a bit towards the end. She discovers her recently dead husband had a darker side she knew nothing about.

Nightmare Alley - 7.5/10 DVD

Bradley Cooper stars in a story about a con man in the early 1940's who starts small, gets above himself and gets his comeuppance. Worth a watch.

The French Dispatch - 7.5/10 DVD

Wes Anderson's latest effort centers around reports from France printed in an American paper with four separate stories. Usual Wes Anderson weirdness. Needs more than one viewing.

Watched Marry Me on Neon over the weekend.

Mindless Romcom (more rom than com) starring Jennifer Lopez-Affleck and Owen Wilson.

She's a pop star that gets jilted quite publicly and marries a random dude in the crowd.

3/10

I watched Explorer (Ranulph Fiennes Doco) over the weekend.

8/10 - fascinating look at his life. I'm always fascinated by people like him who are so driven for adventure, whether it be for exploring or his military career.

Would probably have rated it higher if it had been more detailed but I think it would have been a multi hour marathon had it covered all of his adventures.

I watched Margin Call last night. It’s from 2011 and about the start of the subprime mortgage crisis.

Absolutely superb, especially for a film made for $3.5 million in 17 days. It’s got a superb cast - Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Demi Moore, Paul Bettany, Stanley Tucci, Zachary Quinto. This sort of movie never gets made anymore, it’d be a TV series instead.

9/10.

After Hours. An under-rated Martin Scorsese black comedy from 1985.
