Costa Ronin being both The Americans and Homeland while they're both airing the current season playing very similar characters but a few decades apart and confusing me! (although, fortunately, Homeland has just finished this season).

OMG - unless you are the toilet cleaner, why worry?

Because some males will want to pee while standing up without an even smaller target area?

Geektastic: Toilet seats installed so that they will not remain in the vertical position.

I thought this was an english thing. Don't really see this in New Zealand.

I hate the american toilet bowls, all that water they look like they are always overflowing,  and all your excrements circling around at the top slowly flushing away.

I wonder if there is a market in the Usa for toilets that are not disgusting!!  New..business idea, will take over america , toilet by toilet.

Funny, I was going to post how I preferred the USA style bowls. You certainly do get a good look at last night's dinner as it does a couple of wide victory laps before disappearing.

But what I do like about them is the large target water area. If you have kids in the house you tend to find their bombs are dropped short of the target area with ensuing dried out skidmark issues. With the USA massive pond area there's basically no porcelain collateral damage.

Not sure if that all means a lot more water consumption.

Talking of a smaller target area, my question was supposed to have been a little funny - but it seems I missed the target completely.

"The problem is when people want their cake and eat it too."

I really have trouble understanding this saying - Why else would I want cake if it's not for eating? What else do people do with cake? Are there cakes that aren't for eating? Why would I buy that?

My better half has a cake stand. A friend asked what it was - when told, he looked confused. "but cakes aren't for standing, they're for eating!"

There are worse - the dutch/german toilet with "continental shelf" inspection platform for example:

Probably the worst though is the drop-pit squat toilet in countries where there's a kind of social taboo about cleaning toilets - to the extent that it's such a low status profession to be a toilet cleaner that despite general poverty and lack of jobs, there are no applicants at all for many apparent vacancies - yet everybody (and that means a hell of a lot of people and a terrible person to public toilet ratio) has the same problem that when you've gotta go, then you've gotta go. The fine art of balancing in a steady squat position isn't something that comes naturally to most westerners, and maintaining sufficient clearance to add to the pile without becoming part of the pile is close to impossible.  Shudder.  I was going to post this earlier, but it was too soon after breakfast, too close to lunch. I'll have forgotten I posted this by dinner time I hope.

I beg to differ. I see it often here. Most recently yesterday at the Wrinkly Rams in Omarama.

It's disgusting. The water level in US toilets sits at just below the top of the bowl.   This causes the added disgustingness of stuff falling into the water is more likely to cause the contents of the bowl to splash out of the bowl onto the floor and yourself.

I see your point about a wider target area, but I've no problem with my aim in NZ style toilets.

Cables that no matter how careful you are at setting up it always ends up a spaghetti junction like behind my TV unit. And also how in the name aunt Matildas' azaleas does a power cord with one end in your hand and the other end in the device or wall outlet start off clear and end up a tangled monster?

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Ha, I've not seen that before. Learn something new every day.

One thing I've come to wonder about, is why bidets are not more common.

It seems quite disgusting to use just paper to do the clean up, it must leave a bit of smearing depending on your recent consumption and internal bacterial balance.

Bidets should be everywhere, the only way to clean up properly.

But, enough of the toilet talk.

I can't say I'm too fond of some other toilet issues;

The tiny NZ separate toilet room.  This mightn't be such a problem any more, but it was damned annoying if the toilet room was too narrow to open a broadsheet newspaper and relax.  I suppose bad wifi in the karzee could be a modern equivalent.

The combined toilet/bathroom, with flush-mist inevitably floating to the toothbrush holder.

The almost ubiquitous "en suite".  I actually wanted one of these once - was going to put one in our master bedroom, SWMBO objected stating that there was no way I was ever going to take a crap in her bedroom - which made sense.  She got a large wardrobe instead, and the bonus for me is that she never takes a crap in my bedroom.
