SEE HOW THEY RUN (2022) 5/10

In 1950s London, plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after a pivotal member of the crew is murdered. When a world-weary inspector and an eager rookie constable take on the case, they find themselves thrown into a puzzling whodunit within the glamorously sordid world of underground theater, investigating the mysterious homicide at their own peril.

I usually like whodunnit films, but I just couldn't get into this one. Reviews across the web are mostly positive, but personally, I found it to be an absolute snooze fest; literally. I had to rewind twice after I fell asleep. A strong cast should have made the film a winner, but the meandering pace, predictability and some cringe worthy dialogue, made it a disappointment for me. I'm hoping that the upcoming Knives Out 2: Glass Onion will be an improvement.

I think that my 5/10 is still a little generous, but because of more favourable reviews online, I'm thinking that I may have missed the point in all of it.

RESIDENT EVIL: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) 6.5/10

Once the booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City is now a dying Midwestern town. The company’s exodus left the city a wasteland…with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, the townspeople are forever…changed…and a small group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.

Zombie films; love 'em or hate 'em (There is no middle ground). I am a fan, and I have seen all six of the original RE franchise. This new episode, which is not part of the original series, is, in my opinion, a worthy addition to the genre. I've had this one in my iTunes library for some time, continuously postponing my viewing of it, due to the thought that it would be a below par stab at renewing the series. I was wrong. Plenty of gory action, and a new ensemble of actors in the roles that any RE fan will instantly recognize. Keep watching through the closing credits as there is an added scene which seems to point toward a sequel. Enjoyable "popcorn" fun.

LIGHTYEAR (2022) 6/10

Legendary Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear embarks on an intergalactic adventure alongside a group of ambitious recruits and his robot companion Sox. As this motley crew tackles their toughest mission yet, they must learn to work together as a team to escape the evil Zurg and his dutiful robot army that are never far behind.

I love the Toy Story films, and Buzz Lightyear is one of my favourite characters. Now he has a whole movie named after him, and its not a bad watch, but is a little complex. I can't profess to know exactly what was going on, but I do know that the visuals and audio are top notch. The perfect blacks of an OLED TV really show off the dark scenes in the film, making for an enjoyable Home Cinema experience

Enola Homes 2 on Netflix.

Sweet fancy Moses. The first one was a forgettable, but passable, way to kill a couple of hours. This sequel is just awful. Even David Thewlis chewing the scenery couldn't save it.

2/10

Not a review as such, but I am looking forward to two films slated for December releases on Netflix. Both are in theatres at the moment, and have great reviews from both critics and audience on Rotten Tomatoes.

GLASS ONION: A Knives Out Mystery - December 23rd

If any of you saw the first Knives Out film, you will know that it was a witty and fun whodunit. Daniel Craig returns as the detective, Benoit Blanc.

GUILLERMO DEL TORO's PINNOCCHIO - December 9th

As a child I loved the Disney animated films, and Pinocchio was a favourite. Hopefully Del Toro has managed to keep the magic of the original movie.

LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER (2022) 7/10

Unhappily married aristocrat Lady Chatterley begins a torrid affair — and falls deeply in love — with the gamekeeper on her husband’s country estate.

I have been aware of this story for many years, but never actually read the book or watched one of several films preceding this one. Its a love story which will possibly put a few people off, but I really enjoyed it.

There are several explicit sex scenes, which somehow seem to add to the story, and Emma Corrin (The Crown) really throws herself into the role of the young Lady Chatterley and her love for her husbands gamekeeper..

There's not much more I can add. Recommended.

The Darkest Minds 8/10 - Teen scifi dystopia.

Excellent. The opening is horrible not something you want young kids to see. Imo low user rated for that reason almost turned it off myself. 95% of the rest is excellent. Prepare yourself for series or sequel setup at the end. Disney+

Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio - Netflix - 8/10. (Mainly for the artwork)

Oh boy this version is a bit on the dark side. Would not recommend for kids under 13y. The cgi is great. The story line is not how we all remember the original and it is not a very smooth script.

All Quiet on the Western Front: 8/10

Netflix - German with English subtitles.

Very good movie. I personally enjoyed seeing the story from the German perspective as I was schooled in history in the UK where the Germans were very much painted as an evil agressor making it easy to forget that they suffered too. Its quite graphic in places, but I dont think its over the top with it.  Certainly makes you appreciate what soldiers on both sides of the trenches had to go through.  Quite a long movie (~2.5 hrs) though the pace is pretty constant throughout.
