Putting aside the noise on gift cards - atrocious things that should be banned, especially when stores insist on giving refunds as 'store credit', looking at you Farmers! - and the general commentary on stock, staff training, nasty pricing etc.... I wonder where to next?

DSE has got some good retail real estate in welly and Auckland, there is convenience for people in using retail stores that will always beat the order online and take delivery x days later. My confusion with dse was always around what they were trying to be and for who. The days of hobbyist electronics has declined and jaycar owns that space now, although their Wellington location isn't convenient (good old Wiseman electrical....). Jbhifi and Noel Warehouse are continuing to push into the mainstream space - did you ever think Noel's would be a premium Apple partner ? They are becoming a destination store... Even if they are a little inconveniently placed (Tory st).

Against this backdrop, how is dse offering something no one else is? Jbhifi and Noel's are not cheap except when they push specials, and even then you need to be on the ball and do a lot of research.

Places give you store credit when they are not obliged to accept goods back under law. If they have to take the item back then you can get a refund by the method you paid.

Absolutely not! This is not the first time vouchers have not been honoured as consequence of a receivership, nor will it be the last. So, if you don't want to take the risk, then just don't buy them. End of.

As for me, Warehouse gift cards save my sanity at Xmas when shopping for nephews and nieces. Convenient, easy to purchase, package and post. I accept there is a very small chance that Warehouse may not honour the gift card, but the chance is soooo small I'm prepared to accept the risk. In the unlikely event they went under, I would take it on the chin.

I think that sums it up. If you want consumer electronics, you have Noels, Harveys, Bond, The Warehouse, add in JBHifi, and its covered. Jaycar has the hobby/parts space. DSE is a bit of everything but an "after the other ones" choice for the mainstream, if not everybody.

Well actually, because they don't own real estate, they don't have a diversified portfolio to help with lulls in their sales.

To be fair, we no longer have the options of Bond's...

dolsen: So, are there any deals currently to be had?

On this page (stuff), someone is quoted as saying "I came looking for some things at the right price and found them". Not sure if there were any fire / inferno sales still continuing, or, need to wait a bit.

Bad news for the staff and investors, however, the actual store has been quite useless for me for a while now. Luckily, I had warned people I knew not to buy DS gift cards due to the risk before Christmas.

Our local has a few LASER BD3000 blu ray players for $129, multizone for DVD and Blu-ray apparently. Thought it was quite good, so I got one.

Bonds was just Noels in disguise so they could sell all brands of whiteware
Used to be if you wanted to sell F&P you could not sell a lot of competing brands too.

Yup - one would do big finance plans, while the other would go cheap for cash...
But in the end, even this was a bit of a confused mess.

Used to be that F&P quality was over and above any other brand.

Used to be.

Fred,

You must go back a year or three!  I well remember John Gilberts- often shopped there. I seem to remember that he was originally a confectionery wholesaler who saw an opening in electronics. In the old days, there was a counter with racks of shelves behind, no pick an' mix stuff. You asked the guy for something, he went back and found it. Just like the traditional grocery/hardware etc. shop in those days. Later the supermarket thing was done.

I'm talking about the early 1960s....

tripp: The thing that gets me is that management said sales numbers were not as they expected for December sales.

Well 1 reason for that is because staff did not update the labels on items, there were a number of items that had the RRP but you would only know if they were on sale if someone posted a pic on here or you made them scan each item you were looking at (which the staff hated).
More than once from a couple of different shops I asked to look at the price listing to see if there was anything and both times was told "we did not get one" or just blank looks.

Got to love those price check scanners in the likes of KMart and Warehouse.  I've found a deal or two that way that I'd never have if left to slack display pricing on shelves etc.

How the Dick Smith Holdings disaster made a fool of The Motley Fool.

Basically The Motley Fool even posted an article saying buying DSE was better than JB HiFi.

I used to really like shopping at Dick Smith when I was a kid. I used to hang around in there all the time looking at things and touching stuff (and no doubt annoying the staff). Unfortunately the last time I went in one was probably 5 years ago. I did go in in December to look at any bargains (like a vulture) and there wasn't much left. Looked pretty sad then. I'll still miss DSE though somewhere in the back of my brain.
