freitasm:This is completely off topic and I already asked to move on folks.

Sorry but I thought the subject was things that annoy or Whiskey Tango Foxtrot which I always think "I use Te Reo" is when they are not and so is annoying and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

Unless it isn't?

Ok, today‘s +beep+

How can you be off topic in a forum section called Off Topic? Or is one then OffOff topic? I feel like shit now, like I've committed sacrilege - or have I? I should hang around less in forums, it's bad for the mind. :-(

And finally I got the ‚Error: Your post was not accepted due to bad word‘

The sub-forum is called off-topic, meaning the discussions created here don't fit in any other sub-forum. It doesn't mean the discussion can go wandering away from the topic.

Errrr .... ???

How can an off-topic have a topic?

I think some need the logic explained there as wandering away would mean "going off" and you say "the sub-forum is called off-topic".

RollyShed: How can an off-topic have a topic?

At the risk of going even further off topic, the topic is in the first post of the thread.

I've had that one. Also the topic has to be 'meaningful'.

No, I was just joking ... I have no negative reservations because of a person's mother tongue or dialect - not even about the famous bavarian ‚Oachkatzerlschwoaf.‘ ;-)

I thought that one was progressing OK, I remember some news clip from a few months ago where they were talking enthusiastically about it and demo'ing it to the media.

For those who need a translation of this stuff, or more useful phrases to use, I can highly recommend Viennese for Americans - A Phrase Book, which contains useful phrases for tourists like "Listen, if English was good enough for Jesus, it ought to be good enough for you clowns", "We've been in Austria for two days and we still haven't seen a kangaroo", "Have you ever done it with cowboy boots on?", and "You can't talk to me like that! I'm an American, dammit!".

(OK, when I say "tourists" I mean more ones from the US).

Reminds me a little of this joke from 15 or so years ago

Someone Else:
The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five year phase-in plan that would be known as "Euro-English".
In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have 1 less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be ekspekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"s in the language is disgraseful, and they should go away.

By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.

After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi to understand ech ozer. Ze drem vil finali kum tru! And zen world!

Awesome! :-)

But even we Germans stick to the english language despite they have left us. It‘s just handy in the ROW.

Even if it is sometimes difficult, I am a big fan of Europe! The countries have (for the most part) finally learned not to see what divides them, but what unites them, and to come together. No one has to give up their culture in order to get to know, accept and respect other cultures and still find a solution. That is also the damned duty of our EU politicians. I am especially pleased that people sometimes quarrel violently, but still sing together the Ode to Joy from Beethoven's 9th symphony and (for lack of a European text) still the original German text by Friedrich Schiller. I think this is one of the few (national) hymns in the world that is NOT so good for military marching and parading. So, that should be it from me now - that‘s otherwise really OT.

If I recall correctly, when Tony Blair was PM in Britain his government contrived to spend £14 billion (yes - fourteen billion Sterling) on a computer system for the NHS that got biffed without ever being rolled out.

Some of the instances of public money being wasted that we see are so outrageous that I consider they ought to be criminal offences.
