Altered Carbon: Resleeved (Netflix).

A decent prequel to the series which was obviously positioned as a first in a series movies which never happend.

What it does highlight is the deficiencies of Netflix recommendations engine. I loved the Altered Carbon series, especially season 1, but I had no idea Netflix released a prequel 2 years ago. The reason it never came up in my recommendations was probably because the prequel was anime rather than life action, and I typically don't watch anime. Surely though, the fact that I "liked" the original series should've been an indication enough that I would be interested in the prequel? This would probably explain why it never got the expected viewership. Oh well.

Watched a couple of movies while on holiday.

Down in Arrowtown, we went to the lovely little theatre Dorothy Brown's (actually, we saw the movie in "The Den" which is an even smaller little theatre off to the side at DB's).

The Banshees of Inisherin

Starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in the main roles, it's a slow burner set on a small Irish island in the 1920's.

It's...odd. Slightly enjoyable and a great movie to watch in an arthouse cinema, but I won't be getting it on DVD.

There's a few things going on that never really get resolved or come to anything, but the main story is fully fleshed out until the end. I was left unfulfilled.

Avatar: The Way of Water 3D HFR

Saw this at the local cinema in 3D High Frame Rate. I liked it. I knew what I was going to see and it didn't disappoint.

Visuals were excellent, although my wife came out and almost immediately got a migraine.

I thought the HFR was interesting...

Thai Massage. Netflix 9/10

I enjoy foreign movies because they flavour and open up the mind to others traditions and ways.

This is an Indian movie with subtitles not dubbed. It's warm, poignant, funny, colourful and the main actor plays a 70 year old naive and very genuine old man with a dysfunction of concern.

I had a fixed smile on my face throughout. Good to watch when you need something easy and uplifting.

White Noise
Netflix
9/10 for blowing away our expectations and making us laugh a lot. Will try the director’s, Noah Baumbach, older movie “Marriage Story”

Four Good Days
Netflix
9/10 for my wife who enjoyed the intense relational issues with a recovering drug addict

Matilda The Musical
Netflix
5/10 I really enjoyed the first half musical particularly from the child singers. It is a big expensive production but I increasingly disliked the story line where we would have benefited from fewer variations from the original story. I found the denouement was too drawn out and unfulfilling i.e. boring. Parents should be aware that it is quite dark and intense for younger children.

Vice - DVD - 8.5/10

Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Steve Carrell star in the story of the rise of Dick Cheney to US Vice-President, President in all but name. Bale is fantastic (he is unrecognizable) and the others play fine supporting roles. There are, suprisingly, some laughs along the way.

The story reminds us that the US political system was broken beyond repair long before Trump turned up.

Don't Look Up - 5/10 (IMDb 7.2/10) Netflix

Two low-level astronomers must go on a giant media tour to warn humankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth.

Was this supposed to be a tongue in cheek farce - it failed in our books. Just made it to the end. Good actors (some Oscar winners and nominees) reduced to this, they must have bills to pay, alimony etc.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Avatar - The way of water - Saw it at the largest Imax in North America in 3D (world?).

It's phenomenal from a size, scale, graphics, etc perspective. The story was very long and seemed to get lost throughout. No-one does movies like Cameron.

That screen was so freaking massive. Hard to describe. 3D had moments of amazing, but most of the time wasn't really that noticeable, compared to the orginal which in my view was/is the gold standard in how to do 3D.

8.5/10.

Wife dragged me to Puss In Boots to get away from the ridiculous heat in Canterbury over the weekend (32).

Time to stop the sequels now. Well below par compared to the other ones. 6/10.

Black Panther Wakana Forever   4/10

Slow start and really boring for the first half. Movie is way too long for a superhero movie - this is not an Avengers film so it doesn't have to be over 2.5 hours long.

Picked up a bit of steam when (mild spoiler) Wakanda was attacked and I'm relieved they steered clear from the Avatar tropes. Was half expecting the modern world (who gets a bad rap in this movie) to either attack Wakanda or Talocan so it's good they didn't go down that track. When will people get that modern technologically advanced weapons and armor are no hope for people with spears riding large unprotected animals.

Final battle was a bit weak, very weak actually when I think about it but meh.

Finally, winged feet? Really?
