Yeah I'd agree with that.  This phase of Marvel films has mostly been a disappointment to me, barring a couple of standouts and the streaming shows were pretty good IMO

I think we're coming to the end of every commercially viable film being CGI comic book fare. It reminds me a bit of the swords and sandals trend that was around in the early 2000s.

It's a pretty volatile time at the moment with the streamers pulling back and CGI crap not performing as well but hopefully something a but more diverse and interesting will come along to drive the movie industry.

John Wick 4 at cinema. Wow, was my reaction to the price of movies now, fortunately AA member discount price has not changed so well worth doing it that way. Also wow was reaction to movie. Great cinematography, action sequences were very impressive and very long. Loads and loads of violence, so be careful on who you take. Couple of people left during it. Well worth seeing if you are into this sort of movie.

"I don't like violence"...walks into probably one of the most violent action movies in recent times, gets upset, and leaves.  People are weird.

Thanks for the review, can't wait to see it after watching the first 3 multiple times.

Yes, the cinema costs are getting beyond the casual 'lets go see a movie' kinda decision, it has to be something pretty special now.  I was just commenting yesterday that it wasn't unusual to see the foyer in a movie theater packed with lines out the door on the average Saturday, the theaters are like a ghost town now, I wonder how long they will survive.

Mummies 7/10 TV Animation

It follows three mummies as they end up in present-day London and embark on a journey in search of an old ring belonging to the Royal Family, stolen by the ambitious archaeologist Lord Carnaby.

Great little family movie. Enjoyable.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre 7/10 TV

Special agent Orson Fortune and his team of operatives recruit one of Hollywood's biggest movie stars to help them on an undercover mission when the sale of a deadly new weapons technology threatens to disrupt the world order.

Nearly gave it a 5 then a 6. But Huge Grant just saves this movie with his Michael Caine Cockney like accent, along with Josh Hartnett. Jason Stratham was appalling. Guy Richie rips off Bond movies format and similar movies even down to the Bond scene music. Would I watch it again, not really.

scuwp: the theaters are like a ghost town now, I wonder how long they will survive.

It's amazed me for the best part of a decade. Cinemas are more flexible than they used to be now with a combination of smaller exhibition spaces bets are hedged. I believe Sylvia Park has been a big success. Personally I really like that because real food is available at a reasonable price and the theatres are well thought out and perform well.

Event Westgate was recently remodeled. I have not seen it. I believe they still hire out to some mega church service on Sunday.

I've often wondered why cinemas don't branch out into small gigs by well behaved indie bands or something like that. The sound proofing is good enough for low key performance.

Saw the new Shazam, thought it was terrible, someone should be fired. Cheesier than a stuffed crust cheese pizza. Loved the first one. Enjoyed the new Antman much more than Shazam.

That said the new cinemas in the Hutt are pretty spiffo but.... People were waiting to go into the Imax cinema and it's the first cinema in the large hallway but not large enough as it blocks anyone being able to get to the others. Seems a bit of a fail.

Glass Onion - Netflix - 7.5/10

Follow up to Knives Out that I know some people liked and some people hated. On second watching I liked it more. Not as good as the first attempt though, but not by much.

My local (Hoyts Te Awa) has so few staff now. The front counter is never manned instead you buy your tickets at the confectionary counter. Plus they only have two staff working these counters and you won't see anyone else - there is no one checking tickets as you walk in. Anyone can wander into any of the theatres without a ticket and given that they are never full you will find a seat.

Anyway - also saw John Wick 4 last night (yes I paid for a ticket ;-)). The action set pieces are amazing and a step above anything else. I'd watch again.

Trivia - John Wick only says 380 words in the movie. Most of the "acting" was picked up by the other characters and they did a great job - kudos to Bill Skarsgard, Donnie Yen, and especially Scott Adkin with a truly surprising performance.

Last Night In Soho - DVD - 7.5/10

Directed by Edgar Wright (Baby Driver) it's an odd but interesting movie that starts off as a sort of teen coming of age movie but then turns into a murder/horror movie based around Soho in the 1960's.

Best Laid Plans - DVD - 6.5/10

Reese Witherspoon stars in a fairly low budget Coen Brothers style movie with lots of twists and turns involving relationships, scams and drugs.

Murder Mystery 2 on Netflix.

Adam Sandler and Rachel from Friends reprise their roles from Murder Mystery 1.

Hilarity ensues.

OK - not hilarity. But some guffaws and a bit of eye-rolling.

Good mindless entertainment on a Saturday evening in front of the telly. 6/10

Conan The Barbarian - I never actually ever finished the whole movie in one go growing up, so did it this weekend while wife was away :)  For its time, 7/10

Conan The Conqueror is on the list next...

Yo might be right, but I quite like Sandler and his brand of humour - and it had a good supporting cast.

He was probably the best in the whole thing.
