Magic - DVD - 7.5/10

A very young Anthony Hopkins stars alongside Anne Margaret in a film directed by Richard Attenborough.

An aspiring magician hits on a unique idea of using a foul mouthed ventriloquists dummy as his diversion tactic while doing tricks. He's on the verge of stardom but can't handle the pressure and dissolves into schizophenia with the dummy the dominant personality.

Hopkins gives a performance that shows that stardom was beckoning and the supporting cast do well in a very atmospheric film.

Ad Astra .

A bit unusual for a Brad Pitt movie . He wasnt being Brad Pitt .
Anyway, started off really good. Had a 2001 Space Odyssey vibe to it for the 1st half .

Then it wnt more & more hollywood BS , degrading into unbeleiveable nonsense at the end.
ie to reach his spacecraft , hundreds (thousands?) of miles away , he simply jumps from another orbiting spacecraft, going through a very thick planetry ring using a hunk of broken metal as a shield .

Maybee 6/10 . Was watchable . Could have been so much better .

John Wick 4 - 8/10

Saw this at Focal Point Cinema on Saturday, after re-watching the first three films with my partner in the week leading up to it.

If you've seen any of the first three films then you will know what you are in for. There is plenty of violence - some of it balletic, arguably gratuitous, but definitely well choreographed. If you're someone who is squeamish about violence then you're unlikely to have enjoyed the preceding films, and probably won't be walking into this one voluntarily.

My main observation is that this is a loooong film, for its type. Nearly 3 hours long. That's a lot of runtime inflation for nearly 10 years, considering the original was a tight 1 hour 40 mins. I said to my partner as we walked in that as the last film in the series (apparently), then maybe it will be justified. Even though I enjoyed the film overall, I don't think they really justified the extra 40 mins. They could easily have trimmed 20% off each of the action set pieces (of which there are many) and it wouldn't have affected the story substantially (or at all), and we would have been home in time for tea and crumpets. Instead, we were sat there to the end, the clock nudging past 11pm, wondering why we needed to watch Winston walk ponderously past a gallery of artwork for nearly 40 seconds just to deliver a message.

It's beautifully shot (if you'll forgive the pun). There is a very nice scene in the last third making use of an overhead POV which shows the action in a new light. The action is impressive, as always. The characters are given a light touch - John Wick remains impassive, but new characters such as Caine are given only enough to place them in context. An article I read this morning described the original as "restrained", and despite the bloated run time I would still describe this installment as "restrained" in some areas - character development principally. Often this hurts the overall story, but in this case it makes way for the audience to place themselves alongside the characters, to feel their emotions and appreciate the pain they are feeling (both physical and emotional). I realise I'm probably overselling the significance of what is basically a shoot-em-up film, but I feel like Keanu's understated performance is very deliberate here, and is part of what makes this film more than just a dumb action flick. I just wish they had been a little more disciplined in the editing suite.

There is a post-credits scene, right at the very end. But it's fairly minor - setting up some kind of spinoff maybe? If you're struggling to cope with the late hour, or if the theatre staff are giving you a grumpy look, then you can probably skip the end credits scene. A quick google will reveal the important info.

Never really followed much basketball or nike history. Thought Matt Damon played his character quite well. Couple of laughs thoughout. Enjoyed it. Didnt expect to.

John Wick 4 on Vmax. Pretty decent, much the same as the prior 3 movies. It must have been exhausting to film. 7.5/10 from me.

Mario movies 7/10

Took the kids, youngest is mad mario fan, plays the game, has the tee-shirt, had great time.
Tweenager thought would be too cool to enjoy but had great fun.

Me I thought completely as expected, predictable script but nice graphic and the odd in joke. Didn't look at my watch.

I did some brief reading after watching it. It sounds like all the KGB/spy stuff was made up for the movie, so no high speed car chases. Made for a better movie though.

The car chase was colossally silly but also predictable.

I ended up rolling my eyes a fair bit but still enjoyed the movie a lot.

I have some iTunes vouchers left over from Christmas, so I treated myself to Avatar: The Way of Water.

I don't go to the movie theatres any more, so I've been waiting for this to go digital for some time.

I didn't expect much of a story, which is the way I like it when watching big budget action films. Indeed, my expectations proved correct.

The film is a Home Cinema nerds dream. Superb audio and visuals, made the three hour running time fly by. Loved it! 9/10

Super Mario Brothers 5/10

Left with mixed feelings felt a bit ripped off. Potential for this to be a winner for Nintendo but thought it fell a bit flat. The animation is great and the colours are amazing. But the story was weak and they jammed a lot of the Nintendo universe into 90 minutes rather than leaving it to be explored.

Unfortunately newer TV's don't support 3D anymore, but I think that some of the BD players still do (not sure). If you have a TV with 3D capabilities, you need to hold on to it as long as possible
