Sometimes I put a random film on, just to have something going in the background. The other night the tv was on Oz 7 and I let it run. The film was The Predator. This is not the Predator with Arnie, or even its successors. It is some kind of confused mish-mash that makes no sense at all, even within the parameters of these kinds of films. Admittedly I was only watching it in glimpses while I did other things, but it seemed to be a random collection of outtakes that were stitched together by a monkey with attention deficit issues. It jumped from one incoherent scene to the next, with lots of pointless violence that seemed to come out of nowhere for no fathomable reason. I could discern no plot at all.

I mention this only because this film was so spectacularly bad. It is actually probably one of the worst films ever made, at least one of the worst I have seen. It is so bad you can actually enjoy how bad it is. I don't know how it got made. I can only assume some cowboy company bought the the Predator rights to make a quick buck.

I saw this one a while ago - I am a fan of the Predator and Alien and crossover movies, but this was one that was just cashing in on the legacy.

It's not terribly acted, or scripted, as such - it's just generally terrible.

It has some "stars" in it - Keegan Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane etc, but it's certainly the poor cousin of the group of licensed Predator films.

It almost feels like a fan-made film at times.

John Wick 4

I'm in the minority and most will probably disagree, but to me this movie was just boring (not helped by the 160min runtime). There was one nice sequence towards the end with a continuous overhead shot of a protracted gunfight, but other than that it offered nothing new.

I don't want to get into spoilers so can't say why, but I also found the ending both anticlimactic and thematically "wrong".

I enjoyed the first one a lot and feel it should have been left as a standalone movie. For me the sequels have been increasingly diminishing returns, and Chapter 4 was the worst.

If you like over-the-top action then I'd recommend Sisu instead, as it's way more fun than John Wick's latest outing.

I don't think there is one as it depends so much on the specific movie. If a movie remains engaging the whole way through I don't notice the length. I've seen plenty of movies over 2.5 hours that flew by, and also plenty under 2 hours that felt like they went on forever.

There is definitely a modern tendency to make most movies longer than they need to be though.

That's a tough one - I have seen movies that I think are overly long at 90 minutes.

I've also left movies after 3+ hours and though, wow...that ended quickly!

It very much depends on the engagement levels I feel.

the two films on Netflix about Mothers revenge, one is with Jennifer Lopez and it couldnt be more hollywood by numbers than this film , the plot is by the numbers and nothing is original 5/10 . Then there is the Polish one where there is no way this would be made in America, i spent most of the movie wincing at the violence and laughing at the same time, there is a scene with a knife through the forehead that i shouldnt be laughing at. It looks really good and every camera trick is used to make up for the , i presume , small budget. worth a watch 7/10

CREED III (2023)

Being a big fan of the Rocky series and the first two films in the Creed franchise, I sat down in my small Home Cinema to watch the latest addition; CREED III. Michael B Jordan once again takes on the role of Adonis (Donnie) Creed, and also makes his directorial debut.

Having retired from boxing, Donnie spends his time with his wife and daughter and also helps to train the talent at the local gym. On top of all this he has become a boxing promoter. His idyllic world is soon to be rocked by the appearance of an old friend from the past who wants the chance to fight again after spending several years in prison.

I had a feeling of Deja Vu while watching CREED III. So much of the story had been told before in the Rocky series, and as such, was very predictable, with more cheese than a Dominos Pizza. Yet I was totally entertained by the brutal fight scenes, with plenty of blood, sweat and broken teeth. Possibly as good as I have seen in the films that have gone before it. With this in mind, and the fact that it doesn't deviate from the tried and tested; I score CREED III 7/10

Watched Molly's Game on Saturday night.
It's been on my Sky planner since I recorded it a year or so ago, when we got a free month of Sky Movies.

It had it's slow moments, but overall was fascinating - although I found the end disappointing and underwhelming.
It's all based on a true story, so perhaps they simply couldn't embellish the ending and make it better? I'd give it a solid 7/10

Bullet Train - 7/10 (Prime Video)

I found this a very odd movie. I'm still not entirely sure if I enjoyed it or not. It was "silly" in the sense that there are an improbable number of coincidences, which can be fun but can also just stretch credulity. Things were over the top, and the hyper-stylised cinematography contributed to the cartoonish nature of it. A lot of stuff is never really answered, or resolved, but I never felt like that was the point. It felt like it was just being done for the experience of the actors to hang out with each other and do something that they were enjoying.

In the end, I guess it was good. I felt compelled to finish watching it (took me three interrupted evenings to get through it), and it was memorable. I don't know that I enjoyed it enough to rewatch it, but I would probably give it a soft recommendation if someone was looking for a kooky action film that doesn't require a lot of effort to watch.

The official announcement has not yet been made, but the online Blu-ray disc news service; The Digital Bits, are reporting that James Cameron's THE ABYSS (1989), TRUE LIES (1994), TITANIC (1997) and AVATAR (2009), are all getting 4K UHD disc releases later this year. THE ABYSS and TRUE LIES haven't previously been released on Blu-ray, and fans have been waiting a long time for this welcome news (I know I have).

Hopefully this means that we will be getting these releases in the iTunes store as well, with possible free upgrades for people who already own AVATAR and TITANIC in 1080p.

These releases are expected to accompany or follow the 4K UHD, 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray disc and DVD releases of AVATAR: The Way of Water (2022)

American Psycho - DVD - 8/10

Christian Bale is perfect as the Wall Street yuppie going insane. Still an excellent watch.

Dark Places - DVD - 7.5/10

Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult star in a murder mystery. Theron survives the slaughter of her family which is blamed on her brother. Years later she is forced to revisit the slayings to find the real killer.

Good enough characters and a few plot twists to make it interesting.

Not as good as the first 3 but still fantastic action from start to finish. Can't wait to watch it again. Great (semi) conclusion to the story. Can't wait for the Ballerina spin-off. Going to be a blast!

Guardians of the Galaxy V3.

By far the best one. The backstory around Rocket was incredibly well done.
