Well, just hope that less well off families and especially kids have got in and spent their gift cards before all this happened.   In the case of kids that's pretty likely I'd say.
Also, tough for the staff, some of whom are hard working and try to do a good job.

As for the outcome of the receivership I read on another site that there are only 3 options.   In layman's terms these being Liquidation - selling the stuff they have got.    Sale to another company or buyer.    Or the Receiver hands back the company to the directors.   (the third option rarely happens it seems!)     In my opinion DSE is a damaged brand for these reasons.

1.)   Nerds, and those who think they are nerds, have been telling their friends and relatives for years that DSE is a not the place it used to be.
2.)   Talk to the TechExperts slogan just annoyed a lot of people.
3.)   Their tech service counter proved to be a fizzer because it was only manned part of the time.
4.)   Dropping their 14 day right of return a few years ago annoyed many people.
5.)   Extended warranties being pushed excessively and arrogant sales people arguing with customers about the relevance of the Consumers Guarantee Act.
6.)   Removal of photo printing services.    Yes, I know it may have been running at a loss but it still annoyed people to see it gone.
7.)   An ever narrowing range of tech. products.
8.)   Getting out of gaming products meant a lot of teenagers would not bother to go in there any more.
9.)   Starting to sell frigging kitchen gadgets.
10.)  All the above contributed to the impression that DSE was becoming an unpleasant place to shop.

So, if the business is sold I'd say they will need a complete re-branding and name to start with.   Maybe the 'Sir Ed and Richie McCaw Gadget Emporium'?

And, another thing is that many of the DSE stores are located in long term high rent locations, something for a potential buyer to think long and hard about.
I think some of those Westfield leases are seven or nine years depending on the store size and other factors.

The NZ arm was profitable, so many of our thoughts/experiences are moot. DSE died many years ago to me when they got out of being pre-jaycar jaycar :)

Not for much longer by the looks of it.

tdgeek: I think that sums it up. If you want consumer electronics, you have Noels, Harveys, Bond, The Warehouse, add in JBHifi, and its covered. Jaycar has the hobby/parts space. DSE is a bit of everything but an "after the other ones" choice for the mainstream, if not everybody.

DSE also have a presence in many small towns where not all these choices are available. From that POV they will be genuinely missed in some of these areas should they go under. The staff are the best asset.

I am pretty sure most of the small town stores are franchises - well thats the best way to describe it.
A small-town whitewear or electronics store could get access to the dick smith product catalog and they would provide signage etc. Thats how my step father used to sell their gear in Wairoa.

Pretty much like a jaycar/electus arrangement except if the electus side provided the jaycar signage for you to use next to your sign - i think it said "authorised agent" or something like that in smallprint.

Yep!   DSE Riccarton had a tech service counter.   It was called 'Clever Dick' I think.   It was scrapped a few months ago.   They also had brochures advertising services such as software install, virus removal etc..

Clearly not very well promoted. And not sure that going up against noel leeming group for that sort of thing would ever work anyway.

All of those stores closed over 10 years ago; Matamata, Waiheke Island to name a few

We used to have the DJ Reid rep come to us monthly for us to go through our drawers and write up a list of what we needed.

It was a sad day when they went.

Mind you, we now have RadioSpares and Element 14, gone are the days of ringing around NZ to see who has what.

And for a lot of stuff we also have dx.com and aliexpress.com

Anyone know if the stores are currently open? They were giving  new customers over Xmas, a $5 gift voucher if you signed up to their email newsletters, so I suspect those are void. Just glad I chased them up for my order, as it took them nearly a month to deliver, and had to go to their management to get it. I suspect there will be a few people who haven't got their orders, and I suspect they may become unsecured creditors.

I'm still waiting for some items from 08/12. They are no longer on the website. Phoned today - the staff member didn't even know they were in receivership. Told me I would receive goods by next week as coming direct from supplier - seems unlikely. Asked him to send me an email - said he would but nothing was forthcoming.

What amazes me is that the authorities allow the online store to continue to trade. The items I purchased were apparently in stock yet I am now told they are not - there is nothing stopping a company saying at any time that they have no stock and of course who will supply them now if no certainty they will receive payment?

The bloke this morning offered me a refund however I had major doubts this would be processed and I may have more standing in terms of them having breached the contract which they accepted when they charged my card. I am unclear on the legal position but I believe their failure to satisfy their part of the contract may mean that the albeit unsecured liability is the equivalent value of the items rather than the discounted price.

What is even worse is that they are still sending promotional emails for online shopping - surely this should not be allowed.

If my items don't arrive next week as promised I suppose my best initial action would be to ask CC Bank to reverse that part of the charge.

If they were truly insolvent and accepted orders for goods which they didn't intend to acquire or knew that they had no way of acquiring I believe that the directors may have a case to answer - it will be interesting to see what happens. If there are enough of us in a similar situation we may be able to put pressure on the authorities to act.

Get onto the bank ASAP then, that is an absurd length of time to be waiting. I would have been making a fuss long before now even if they were not in the financial crapper.

No idea why places think that not shipping something the same day it was ordered is in any way acceptable.

The "Dick Does" campaigns had/have to be the biggest crimes against marketing alongside the "You can't beat the Mad Butcher's meat" jingle of recent times.
