Bought a Sony A1 Android TV a few weeks back, for in-laws (the same model I had here for a couple of months). It's a beauty. They have more content now than ever before (SKY, Freeview, Netflix, Google Play Movies, Spotify, Lightbox, Amazon Prime Video). Pretty hard to miss content from this selection, unless is something very niche... Or if content is wanted without pay.

Android is only the operating system. It's not the responsibility of Google to make the exact app you want.

Millions use Android without issue. Android is more open than say Apples offerings, making it more flexible, but like almost everything flexible, more complicated and potentially less compatible. IME the Play Store does a reasonable job of determining what is and isn't suitable for an "official" device. IE some apps will not install on my super high res phone but will on my slightly less than super older Android tablet. I am not even a little surprised the cheapie Android devices don't support lots of things. The advantage of Apple over Android is that you can't put Apple OS on anything not made by Apple. Apple apps require certification to ensure they work properly, but as you have discovered, it's simply not possible to do some of the more "fringe" things on an Apple device, because they can't "control" the experience.

Almost anyone can get an Android license and put it onto hardware it probably wasn't designed to run on.

Sideloading apps is a risky business and if it doesn't work you are unlikely to get much support or sympathy.

I have a Sony Android TV, I have yet to experience any issues with it, so long as I use the apps included, or available via the play store ON the device.

It is also the only smart device I have that SWMBO uses with out constantly asking "How do I do that again" :)

Why do I get the feeling sometimes that people aren't reading my posts? Am I really that unclear? Anyway, I will try again:

I have two Android devices that I regularly use at the moment. One is a cheap Chinese box that brands itself S6 Pro. There are lots of them on Aliexpress. It comes with OS version 6.0. I guess that one is called Big Sucker or something. The box actually works pretty well, within the limitations of Android. Any problems I have experienced are not with it, just with the OS. I use this box for experiments. I also use it next to my bed at night when I want to watch something. That is when I usually run into problems, which was what prompted my first post on this subject.

My main Android device is a genuine, authentic, almost-new 2018 Android TV from Nvidea. It is the real deal, not a cheap clone. It is the famous Nvidea Shield, straight from the USA. It is a separate TV box, not part of any smart TV. It works as well as it is supposed to. It just doesn't work very well for me. However, I bought it, I'm stuck with it, and I try to make the best of it. I don't claim that it is in any way broken. It does what it is designed to do. Unfortunately, what it is designed to do isn't terribly useful to me. Nvidea seems to be obsessed with Netflix. I don't have Netflix. I don't want it. I don't care about it. Nor do I care about YouTube or Google voice searches that never understand what I am saying. I wish they would lighten up on the gimmicks and focus on a little more functionality. Whatever possessed them to get rid of the mouse function? That makes even the apps that are not incompatible unusable. It is like they are going out of their way to be as inflexible as possible. Maybe that is my real complaint. Android is not very flexible, and it is very difficult to do anything that isn't baked into an app, assuming the app works at all.

youtube does not show videos? it's official.

google music does not play videos? it's official.

google movie does not play movies? it's official.

plex does not play locally hosted videos? it's official and support world news for free now.

livechannels does not play IPTV? it's official.

i've tried lots of apps from google play official and all apps did what they supposed to do.

Wow. Lots of comments while I was writing my last reply. I will do my best to work through them.

Yes, all the things you mention are there. The YouTube interface on Windows is also pretty good. But it is a mess on Android. Sure, it works, but it is a pain to use. I have minimised the pain with extensive use of Kodi Favourites, but the Windows version is much cleaner, more configurable, and far easier to use.

I haven't looked at the app list recently, but I wasn't impressed the last time. I will check it again.

No, I am not pirating. I use geo-unblocking to access overseas public service television, which is closer to my taste than most commercial offerings. I also pay for things like Curiosity Stream. I get Freeview off the satellite because our RBI has a data cap. But I'm not into most mainstream offerings like Netflix, Google Play Movies, Spotify, Lightbox, or Amazon Prime Video. I'm not saying there is nothing there that would interest me, just that there is already too much choice and it doesn't make sense to me to pay for more. What I already can access is more than I could ever get through.

I have actually done that, without any success so far. I did get a reply from Medici TV but they basically said that Android was too much trouble for them. There is an app that works with Medici, just not very well. That is a common experience I have. So I just stream it off my laptop and cast it to the TV. So much easier.

I don't consider ge-unblocking piracy, so no need to get high. What I meant, and though it was clear, is actual piracy - things like downloading TV shows from torrents instead of using a streaming service with the distribution rights.

This is an interesting comment as it shows how differently people can perceive things. I hate recommendations and I regard them as a major unwanted intrusion. I had to go to a lot of trouble to turn them off in Android TV but I still get them from YouTube, except they are just random clutter. I can disable them completely in Windows, but for some unfathomable reason not in Android. That lack of user choice is one of the things I hate about it.

I didn't much care for voice search either, since it couldn't seem to get any of the terms I was searching for correct, regardless of how many times I repeated them. But I just replaced the remote so maybe the new one will work better. I will give it another try.

Rather than "What official apps don't perform for you?"

I think it is "What are you after that is not provided by the mainstream apps?"
