With Cameron as producer, could be 20 years before a sequel! But even without his staggered momentum, writer and actor strikes won't help any timeline.
Watched 2001 in 4K.
Picture looked terrific. Still spectacularly boring though.

I agree. I have never been more bored when I watched it, but there are so many people who think that its an absolute classic.

I consider myself a film-lover, and it seems like 2001 should be one of those films a confessed film-lover should have watched. But despite two different attempts over the past 20 years, every time I've tried to watch it I've fallen asleep. I'm sure it is a cinematic achievement, but I can't make it through a screening. That said, I've seen enough to pick up on the quotable moments (the monolith, the HAL sequence) but I figured that's just to be expected for being alive for most of the past 5 decades...
MAD MAX: Fury Road (2015) 4K Ultra HD Disc - 10/10
In these modern times, when people watch movies on their phones or iPads, I can't help thinking that they are missing out on the great experience of watching a film like this on a Home Cinema set up.
This film rocks! An absolute action classic. There is a smidgeon of a story somewhere amongst the carnage, but who cares about a storyline when the action is this good? I couldn't think of an actor more fitting for the role of "Max" than Tom Hardy. He and Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa really "nailed it" in my opinion. One thing that I noticed, is that gunfire, and anything to do with fire was a very unusual bright, over saturated orange colour. I don't know if this was an effect the director wanted, but it really stands out.
This 4K Ultra HD disc should be in everyone's Home Cinema collection, even if its just to use as a Dolby Atmos demo disc for friends. Two hours is a perfect runtime, and I was relieved when the movie ended and the incessant pounding of my eardrums ceased.
I didn't think that the Video was quite as good as the Audio, but I would score it a 9/10. Overall a definite 10. I was surprised to read that most scenes were shot in Namibia, I could have sworn that they were Aussie deserts.

2001 - for me the only highlight was spotting Leonard Rossiter.
Bought Fury Road a few weeks ago. Really should give it a go sometime. The reviews do seem to say at high res the fire looks too CGI.
But the opinion, depending on who you believe, is film makes the best 4K (eg Rear Window and dare I say Lawrence of Arabia), followed by recent digital (eg Top Gun Maverick), then early lower res digital.
Early black and white can look great and I'm eagerly awaiting my 4K The Ladykillers to arrive (even though thats colour)...though I know the postage'll take forever.

Watched Maggie Moore(s) (2023) - IMDb (Amazon Prime). Acting seemed a bit stiff at the start but the story is good and a surprising change in roles for Jon Hamm. Give it 6.5/10.

Handsomedan:
Heart of Stone - Netflix NZ
It's a great premise - a supercomputer (The Heart) under the control of a benevolent CIA-like organisation is under threat and their agent (Stone - played by Gal Gadot) must sort it all out.
It's a bit James Bond, a bit Mission Impossible and a bit rubbish.
Wooden acting, terrible dialogue and hammy action sequences make this a lot worse than it should be.
Jamie Dornan is the co-star and Glenn Close makes a cameo too.
All in all, it's a poorly executed movie that could have been quite good in the right hands. 4/10
This review from Mashable sums it up perfectly.
On one hand, Heart of Stone has the misfortune of sharing major plot similarities with the rollicking Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, which hit cinemas less than two months ago. On the other hand, it also feels like an intentional attempt to ape the magic of earlier Mission: Impossible films, only it lacks the necessary sleight of hand. Worst of all, its sprawling ensemble — led by Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot, Fifty Shades front man Jamie Dornan, and Bollywood superstar Alia Bhatt — ends up a charisma black hole. This is partially owed to the sheer lack of material they're offered by the script, but the problems at the heart of this flimsy action knock-off are multifaceted and run bone deep.
I'd give it a 6/10 as it made a good Saturday Night Pizza Movie. Gal Gadot was great and it was nice that they didn't use this as an excuse to glam her up in a new outfit every other scene. They sadly underused BD Wong whois usually excellent, and it is great to see Matthias Schweighöfer again.
Fully expecting a sequel subject to the writer/actor strikes getting wrapped up sometime soon.

Black Adam (Sky Movies in a Wellington Hotel) - 4/10
I found it an odd one...... some characters just were not needed at all for the story.
I agree there was a lot of threads that didn't really come together. It caught it on a long haul flight and it nicely put me to sleep for a couple of hours before finishing the film as we landed.

The Many Saints of Newark - Netflix - 7/10
Loved the Sopranos so this was a must watch. Loved the fact they brought back Michael Imperioli as the narrator, but the pacing was a little slow and it was hard initially to make the connection between the younger versions of the characters we know from the Sopranos.
Impressive debut by Michael Gandolfini playing young Tony - he really felt right.

Every few years I think "I'll give this another go, maybe this time I'll get what the fuss is about". I still don't get it.

I thought Mel Gibson did a pretty good job (although Thunderdome sucked).

Yes, Mel Gibson did a great job, but he would have been 59 when "Fury Road" was shot.
I mean, you'll be telling me next that Harrison Ford at 80 would do another Indiana Jones movie... Oh! wait....

THE MEG (2018) 4K Ultra HD Disc 6.5/10
Now that Meg 2: The Trench is in cinemas, I thought that it would be a good time to re-visit the original Jason Statham led The Meg.
I can't remember being impressed with the film on my first watch, but on the second viewing, I rather enjoyed it. Yes, it has a B-Movie feel, but the action keeps coming without much of a respite. You know when you pay the ticket price (or Blu-ray price) what you are gonna get. Just have a bucket of popcorn nearby, switch off your brain and enjoy it for what it is... a lot of fun.
Some nice 4K visuals, with some of the brighter scenes above water, a little blown out, the HDR is dialed up a bit far. But, once again, the Dolby Atmos soundtrack is worth the admission price on its own. I was surrounded by underwater bubbly sounds, and some deep lows, especially when the Megalodon was causing havoc with the various underwater crafts. Jason Statham films are almost always dumb action flicks, and I enjoy every one of them; even if he is the same character, just a different name in every role 😁 I just couldn't imagine hearing him with an American accent.
Reviews of the sequel are very mixed, and movie-goers are split down the middle, but I'll give it a watch when its available for home viewing.
