The $50 Aliexpress moth trap, this is one week's worth of catch:

Just ordered a second one for the other side of the house where the peach trees are.  Hopefully there'll be much less guava moth damage this year.

Are those all (or mostly) guava moths in the trap? Or it's attracting other species too.

That's really effective, much better than I've seen from other traps. Can you please share the link to this trap?

We found a very high success rate (99% improvement) from having a few chooks free ranging around the fruit trees. They dig them up from the leaf litter as they are pupating.

Hard to tell, they look guava-mothy but could be others as well.  It's actually sold more as a mozzie trap but does a great job with smaller moths, it won't get the big sparrow-sized puriri moths or whatever those things are.  The one I got was this but there are millions of others on there.  There's also a variant with a mesh bag underneath but it looks like a right pain to change out once it's filled up, this style has bayonet locking lugs as visible in the photo. Use the $5 off coupon code 19D111 when you order.

The way these work is that they vaccuum up the moth (and mozzie) population over time, so they slowly empty the area over a period of a week or two.  This is why it's a good idea to run them well before the fruit appears, so there's little to no moths left to go for the trees.

@neb

Hmm seems to be a generic bug catcher, rather than a pheromone one. So you'll end up catching good insects too.

I understand if you can't get a trap specific for guava moth then one targeting the Asian peach fruit moth will be pretty much as effective as they are closely related.

Oh, yeah, it's just the generic ones that Pestrol sell for 3-4x the price.  Given that there's a near-infinite supply of moths and mozzies I'm not overly fussed about bycatch, and I'm only running it for a month or so while the fruit ripens.

Parcel (item sold on GZ) dropped at the Post Shop in Mairangi Bay at 3:00pm yesterday - delivered by their cheapest courier to Sandringham at 2:50pm today. Yes it’s only across Auckland but that’s pretty good IMO.

NZ Police and their response to the attempted theft of my wife's car on Tuesday night.

Not only have I had excellent interactions whilst reporting the theft via 105, but they've been prompt to follow up asking for video and photo evidence.

I just had a call from the forensics team asking whether the vehicle was still there, as they'd like to take a look at it. Apparently several vehicles were broken into with an attempt to steal them, but they didn;t get away with any.
The alleged thief bled on one of them, which was...unfortunate.

May we know what part of the country? I believe that their service varies quite a bit depending on where you are. My interactions with the Palmy police over the years has been great.

Pearl clutching about the All Blacks haka last night. It’s kind of nice to see NZR on the right side of an issue.

The NY Times - An A.I. Granny Is Phone Scammers’ Worst Nightmare

Daisy Harris, an A.I.-generated English granny, has been stymying scammers with meandering, time-wasting conversations.

25 Nov 2024

Daisy Harris likes birds - there’s one outside her window. Her cat is named Fluffy, and she’d love to tell you about her knitting hobby. She likes tea and biscuits. And she just can’t seem to figure out this internet thing.

But perhaps you can explain it just one more time?

That’s the general vibe of a chat with Daisy Harris, an A.I.-generated granny unveiled this month by the big British phone company O2, as part of its efforts to curb phone scammers.

She doesn’t have a badge, or a warrant, or any way to really stop them. But when an unlucky fraudster dials her number, Daisy does have the power to waste unlimited amounts of their time.

Black Week has started, but I haven't ordered anything - almost everything here has been done before and the companies have given guarantees that they will refund people the difference in price if something is cheaper during Black Week.

I'm looking forward to the opening of the Christmas markets, an absolutely stress-free pre-Christmas period, we've already had a bit of snow and ... cooking delicious things and consciously enjoying them. 😁

I enjoyed the Pre-Xmas Market I went to in Berlin. It felt very calm. It defininitely looked and felt very different to markets elsewhere.

‘Enshittification’ Is Officially the Biggest Word of the Year

The biggest word of 2024 is a profane critique of capitalism first coined in 2022. The Macquarie Dictionary, the national dictionary of Australia, has picked “enshittification” as its word of the year. The Australians define the word as “the gradual deterioration of a service or product brought about by a reduction in the quality of service provided, especially of an online platform, and as a consequence of profit-seeking.”

It's made it to the mainstream.

And as a side-note, I've occasionally thought about starting a thread with a name like "TIL that..." for interesting notes that don't really fit into the Annoy/Smile/W.T.F/whatever threads, just for interesting snippets that people might find useful.  Does that seem justified?  There isn't really any forum for posting miscellaneous things that people might find interesting.
