TheUngeek: No, those cars were not driven the same. One was clearly driven in a way to provoke the spins

The surface makes every difference

So you disagree that two new tyres should be fitted to the rear?

Front or back, I agree that video is a piece of crap.

Bung: If you fancy yourself as better than an average driver you should be on 4 good tyres.

But crap on the back is so much more fun ;)

That wasn't the question.

The point being, the principal of handling with new tyres on front or back is still there regardless of video quality.

Just have ute in for 4 tyres today at Tony's Tyres. There is a buy 3 get 4 deal on Bridgestone and Firestone tyres until end of month. If you have to but two, it might be better to buy an extra tyre and get 4.

Only thing keeping you on the road.

If you know that 2 will fail and 2 will pass, Easier to replace in your own time and then get WoF. If it is touch and go as to which will pass, then go for a WoF first with the plan to get whatever tyres are needed on same day.

What difference do you get with RWD Vs FWD in the same situation (and same tyre choices)?
My guess is that where you put the new set of tyres (front or rear) is as much about where the driven wheels on the car are as it is about anything else... (weather, road condition, driver ability, etc)

every car is different, front engine front wheel drive or front engine rear wheel drive or mid engine rear wheel drive or rear engine rear wheel drive or front engine four wheel drive and this cannot be generalised ...

also whether the car is trick diff or traction control or electronic stability control

if you lose traction (friction < centrifugal force) at the front axle it behaves in a certain way, if you lose traction at the rear axle, it behaves a different way, the conditions of the road and tyre would determine how much friction is available, the ability of the driver determines how much centrifugal force is generated to match the available friction ...

if you put sticky as mud tyres on a 4L ford falcon with no traction control you WILL spin out the moment you touch the accelerator, but if you have traction control, it won't happen whatever rear tyre you have, and you may or may not understeer depending on the balance of your car to gain front friction and generate smooth centrifugal force for a certain cornering speed for that tyre ...

it's not as easy as - ah put on front tyre you'll be fine ... ah put on rear tyre you'll be fine ... no you wont!

Go try for the WoF FIRST.

Reason?  Because if you fail on something else, like, CVs, rack boot, tie rods... then your alignment is going to need doing, so if you go to a tyres and alignment place, you might save a little coin since they can do both jobs at once!

As for the WoF vs. Insurance issue also being discussed in this thread for some reason.  Insurance Law Reform Act 1977, Section 11

"[...] the insured shall not be disentitled to be indemnified by the insurer by reason only of such provisions of the contract of insurance if the insured proves on the balance of probability that the loss in respect of which the insured seeks to be indemnified was not caused or contributed to by the happening of such events or the existence of such circumstances."
Small pieces of sticky paper adhered to your windscreen, or absence there of, seldom cause or contribute to accidents :-)  Same goes for rego (even more so).

The point is the video does nothing to convince me to put tyres on the front or back. I don't know the answer, but using that video to convince anyone either way seems a bit silly.
