Hi

I have a feeling that my front pair of tyres is going to fail in the upcoming WoF inspection.

Here are my questions, please:

1. Should I wait for it to fail the WoF and then go tyre changing or should I be doing anything before going for the WoF inspection?

2. Any recommended best value place to purchase new tyres from, in Auckland?

3. If 2 tyres are dying but back couple pass, should I still be changing just the 2? if yes, where should the new pair be, front or back?

P.S. - The car is Nissan Bluebird sylphy and current tyres are bridgestone steel radial tubeless.

You don't have to wait for the WoF. If you don't feel safe now, then it's time to replace them.

The person helping you with the tires should be good enough to give advice if all four or just the two front ones need to be replaced.

My WoF is due this weekend only, that's why I was relating it to it.

Any recommended place / person who would give genuine advise then pure commercial pitch?

Ace tyres in Church Road, Onehunga, are good, they know what they're doing and can help you if you're on a budget.

As a side note, if you want new tyres, I got a set of Michelin Energy X1's about 5000kms ago - best tyres ever! They are about 50% more expensive, but they claim to get over 50% more kms as well.

My recommendation is buy the best tyres you can afford (Within reason), they are after all, the thing holding you to the road, they will likely improve your handling, braking, and cornering to some degree. Saving 50-100 isn't going to do much for you if you lose traction at an important moment.

I'd go for the WOF, see what they say - they might say rear are fine and front stuffed. Then you know to get the front ones done.

If you straight to the tyre shop, they might (if theyre cunning so and so's) tell you all 4 are stuffed and need replacing, costing you more.......

When putting new 2 tyres on a car, I prefer to put them on the front and move the others to the rear - my reasoning for this is that the front is what drives my car, and turns it. Others say to do it the other way round....but I prefer to be able to move and turn safely :)

Thanks. That's helpful, I wouldn't want to change all 4 unless they really need to be. Getting the WoF done first seems more logical.

Can be good to go to the WOF with a failing item that you know you can fix easily.

I had my wof done early this month and failed both front tyres. They good enough to issue me two extra week of wof when I had time to get the tyres changed.
Once I had the front tyres changed, I went back to the same place. they just reissue the new 6 months wof without extra charges.

And which dodgy shop was this ?

So they knowingly let you back on the road altho you were driving a potentially dangerous vehicle ?
How would you have felt if you had hit someone because of one of the tyres ?

Consumer tested tyres, and makes recommendations. Much easier to get the tyres in advance, rather than go for a WoF twice. I've always used Tonys Tyres.

Thanks, any idea if all WoF inspectors would give a free second chance? it it an obligation on them to do this or depends on their own policy?

This is what NZTA website says regarding fitting new tyres:
"Most tyre manufacturers recommend placing the tyres with the best grip and cornering power - new tyres - at the rear, whether the car is front or rear wheel drive. Fitting new tyres to the front can result in oversteer and loss of control."

Ive always been told to put the good ones on the front even if RWD, makes sense since it the back looses traction its no major, but if the front does its goodbye steering.
