You can keep asserting this any number of times you like and it doesn't make you right. Read the write up on the laws of the game that I posted. I am a football referee, actually had to pass an exam on the rules, and make my living interpreting real laws of the land, am not a Brazilian, and I back the referee 100%. Again, I emphasise the obvious: you may have your opinions on the game and how it should be played but you're not free to make up the laws of the game as it pleases you.

Well since you bought it up I am a football referee as well, have also coached and played. I also make my living interpreting the laws of the land. As I noted earlier my view is that there was no holding and Fred milked the contact. I'd never have given it. Time to agree to disagree.

I am also out of the TAB comp as I had a draw for the Spain v Dutch game. What a match though! Dare I say it, but the Spanish penalty wasn't a penalty either :-)

I'm very happy with tonights result. Today was an absolute crap day (and that on Friday the 13th!!). No better way to end it than like this.

I was probably the only guy shouting in my town living here in England but I feel much more confident about the rest of the cup now that we have finally given Spain payback for what they did to us in 2010 :D

$5 Million? wow. you need to get every result right to win it? I guess whoever wins the TAB would have to put multiple permutations.

On the other hand - the Spanish looked tired aon the back of a magnificent European season. But they did probably spend the majority of their training on diving ;p

I guess it depends what you call the sharp end.

The quarter finals onwards are all live on TV One and you can watch them On Demand as well. They also have some of the Round of 16 games.

theworldgame.sbs.com.au/worldcupvideo just got to use hola unblocker. great quality with picture in picture multi angles available. on demand replays available too. tvnz also are streaming all their 22 games on tvnz.co.nz, and they have all the quarters, semis and final I believe. sbs probably has better quality.

I assume you understand what the word "hold" means, right? Seriously, it's incredible how despite all the evidence that Fred was held, there are people who continue to deny it. I am not excusing the dive but the theatrics and whether he was HELD in the legal, literal sense of the word are separate issues. It's time the game of football actually gets refereed by reference to its real laws and not people's subjective opinions on how it's to be interpreted. If you want some "minimal contact don't count" rule, lobby for it to go into the rule book.

I personally picked the Dutch to win although no one would have/could have picked the score. What happened to the Spaniards? My 20c:

1. Their one trick pony style got exposed -- I am amazed that despite being dominated by players from their two best domestic teams, Spain has pretty much NEVER (in the recent years) picked up any of the things that Real Madrid do well at, e.g. transitioning from defence to attack and utilising fast and powerful players. They are Barcelona Extreme only and as Zico (the Brazilian legend) wrote on the Guardian, once Spain goes behind, they will struggle because they basically have no plan other than tika-taka. It is incredibly effective and efficient when it works (although terribly tedious for any neutrals) but when they go behind, they are in trouble. As soon as the Dutch went ahead, they pretty much acted as though they don't need to worry about Spain's attack. They were right, especially given the choice to bring Torres on.

2. Van Gaal out-coached del Bosque like a Formula One driver lapping an opponent. Observant people would have seen how Robben got nowhere against Ramos when Bayern played RM as Guardiola insisted on just passing the ball sideways. However, it was obvious that if he got to run at Ramos and Pique - both of whom are not the most athletic and are certainly positionally suspect - he was likely to have a field day. And he did.

3. Spain's selection simply reflected a blinding level of homerism and choosing people based on their history. Casillas looked dodgy in the Champions League final and everyone knows that GKs need games. There must be a reason why two of the greatest modern coaches -- Ancelotti and Mourinho -- both refused to have him at a starter at a club where C had all the politics and reputation behind him. What does del Bosque do with C when Spain already has a potentially questionable defence? Start an undercooked GK. And selecting Torres for the squad AND bringing him on when you are behind? Seriously, is this a joke?

4. David Silva has to be one of the worst flat track bullies in football. Where was this guy?

5. Spain really, really has a grotesque lack of speed all round the starting 11 and the squad. Apart from Pedro and Koke, they are all lead-footed. The Dutch totally took advantage.

The commentator on Sky (I know it's not a Sky commentator - just identifying him this way so people who watched the game elsewhere know who I am talking about) kept crapping on about how Costa had a crap game. But he at least held up the ball and brought other players in. They lost all that the moment he was off. I don't think the Dutch will win the WC (you only have to shut down RvP and Robben and they are dead) but van Gaal put on a coaching clinic this morning. Makes me feel good as a United fan too and I am really glad to see football being played the right way -- attacking and the players keeping their feet on the opponents' throats even when they were well ahead.

sometimes two fouls cancel each other out!
I still don't get this in the modern era, but hey, the teams spend 4 years of their lives training for it - I hope the Asians and the Aussies learn how to dive to get better results!

Video refs would go along way to deciding who takes a dive and a genuine penalty.. But no soccer still lives in the 20th century.

And I am afraid Casillas currently has a significant lead (and it's gonna require a monumentally incompetent performance by somebody else for this "crown" to be snatched from him) on the "Most useless GK display in this WC!" chart. Directly responsible for three goals (RVP's header was still a total peach though) and generally looking clueless throughout.

Assuming Nederland win all their games, it will be highly likely that Spain will now have to play Brazil in the next round.

On the holding thing with Brazil. The chap actually did grab the other players shirt - which is a holding foul (he put the back of his hand across the players chest, turned his hand over and grabbed the shirt). The offended player then belatedly fell over backwards as if pulled over, but the timing was wrong and it kind of looks like he sat down for some reason. The theatrics part is in some cases quite important because it emphasises the foul (brings it to the refs attention). However, if the ref feels it wasn't aground, the player still standing probably has the ball.

This world cup they are being a little bit more pedantic with the rules, and by the looks of things, especially with the offside rule (for example in the Cameroon game where an offside was called from a corner kick because an opposition player touched the ball making some of the attackers offside mid jump for the header).

No it doesn't. The offside call was an error. There was no offside.

Footy is not rugby. The rules are simple. The referee makes the call he sees fit. Nobody gets to challenge it.

What a fantastic tournament so far. Six games played and not a single draw, more than 3.5 goals per game on average, a few controversial decisions and surprising results, and none of those annoying vuvuzelas.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.
