I wish I'd never posted now :)

My Amazon account has had my NZ address in it for years. At first, Amazon claimed that the product I selected could not be sent to that address. I created a YouShop account and did not enter the address in Amazon, but suddenly it decided that my address is valid after all. I've subsequently received a shipping confirmation.

I have found some amazon listed products are on again off again for shipping to a NZ address. The last drill I ordered wasnt able to be shipped direct one day, was able to be the next.

I found a few SSD who can be sent to New Zealand directly, and some don't. The price difference is minimal and the quality (Samsung and Crucial) pretty much the same...

Dejhon: by the way guys (and girls)

None of the previous discount codes are avid anymore.

I just purchased a NAS and discovered the latest code for 15% off!

It is: youshopbf11

I have no idea how long it is valid for but just a heads up!

Cheers still working, where do you guys find these codes from?

Just got notification my Zero Lemon 7000mAh battery for my galaxy S3 has just been shipped! First time ever using the service and it seemed to go without a problem. It did take them 4 days (Tuesday-Saturday NZ) to say they had the parcel after it had been delivered to their address. Now just have to wait for it to get here!

Amazon link if anyone is interested.

Ditto.

Sometimes, but not always, its due to Amazon running out of stock and using a temp 3rd party seller.

Doesn't stop them continually sending promos for products that can't be shipped to NZ.

Undecided

I posted on this earlier. Have had mine a few weeks.
I bought in an extra one and sold it on TM.
Excellent product and to keep this on thread the Post shop forwarding service worked a treat

sleemanj:
nomnom: just curious, what is the discrepancy between parcel weight and volumetric weight for everyone with youshop so far.

Volumetric weight in the shipping world is generally a standard 200kg per cubic meter.

A quick check on one of your random packages above confirms that is the calculation they are using.

Edit to add example:

Parcel weight 1.1kg
Parcel dimensions 26cm x 38cm x 13cm
Volumetric weight 2.57kg

0.26m * 0.38m * 0.13m = 0.012844 m3
1m3 / 0.012844m3 = 77.8573653068
2.57kg * 77.8573653068 = 200.093428838

Allowing for measurement errors, rounding etc, it's bang on 200kg per m3.

You're right, Youshop specify it on their page http://www.nzpost.co.nz/products-services/online-shopping/youshop/youshop-international-postage

Having said that, I'm not sure if the OPs question is how to calculate the volumetric weight, or how the volumetric weight usually compares to the actual weight. The later seems a bit of an odd question, it not only depends on the shipper but significantly on the item . A dense non fragile item would could easily be heavier then the volumetric weight, perhaps even if overpacked. Whereas something with a fairly low density would likely go by volumetric weight even if extra packaging is minimal. But perhaps the OP was just wondering in general.

BTW, for the earlier question about repackaging, while technically if the cost is $22.00 (i.e. charged at 1kg) they should consider it per their stated policy, because it's $4.75 for the extra 500g but 1kg $4.50 for the repackaging, I wonder if they actually bother. Perhaps ditto for all cases when it appears at most they will save is 500g/$4.75. On the other hand, perhaps the prices were set this way partially because they will consider it in such a case.

Am I right these codes usually only work once per account? I've seen that mentioned before for the old Kiwibank code. I've never used Youshop before, but could at some stage. At the moment I'm helping a relative. If the code is only likely to work once, I'll probably get them to set up an account and use that rather then use one under my name.

it was the latter. i was just wondering in general. the trend was that i was paying according to the volumetric weight which was about 2-3 times more than the actual weight.

All beware: I have used YouShop successfully several times. It's not cheap but is convenient. Today the wheels really fell off. I ordered a special plastic box from Amazon for $31. They shipped it free to YouShop. YouShop now want $288 to ship to me in NZ.

I spoke to them and that was their bottom line. So I elected to return the item. They said to get a returns number from Amazon, so I did, and the Amazon system guided me to get a UPS pickup from YouShop which has cost me $20. So I entered the details back on the YouShop website and now they want me to pay $144 to return the item.

I have reordered the item from Amazon, to be shipped to me here in NZ at a cost of $59NZ. YouShop say them use volumetric pricing, but clearly is is their own calculation and bears no relation to real world costs, but is a great way to rip-off their customers. For small, lightweight items (this one weighs 7kg) they are fine, but I post this as a warning to others of what in my opinion are very sharp business practices.

I had to return an item as it was a duplicate. Amazon gave me a label to print out and I had the same issue where it wanted me to pay 1/2 of the shipment costs. The only way to get around it is to open a chat session with NZ Post they will ask you to upload the PDF with the label and they will send it off without any issues or payments.

Their volumetric weight formula are well advertised on their website. http://www.nzpost.co.nz/products-services/online-shopping/youshop/youshop-pricing As is their policy of charging 1/2 the price to send to NZ for returns within the US. http://www.nzpost.co.nz/products-services/online-shopping/youshop/youshop-pricing/additional-youshop-fees And the NZ Post YouShop volumetric weight formula is widely used internationally including by international courier companies in some places http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dimensional_weight and even the more generous formulas are not going to save you that much money

If you only paid US$31 for the item, your best option would probably be to simply have it disposed of. Edit: I see someone has suggested they do allow you to use the sellers return service if you ask in the right place.

I don't know the size of your box but your figures suggest the volumetric weight is 29kg. This implies the volume is around 145,000 cubic centimetres or ~52.5 cm each dimension if it's a perfect cube. It seems unlikely the extra packaging needs for a box is that great, so you must have had some idea what the volume would be so should have had some idea of the expected cost. And note, even with a more generous formula of /7000 cm, you'd still be up for 21kg or NZ$207.25. So in any case, if Amazon are willing to ship it for NZ$59 I don't get why you'd even try YouShop. Now not all shippers may use volumetric weight, but clearly NZ Post with their YouShop service as with a number of companies with a variety of services feel it's the best way to reflect their overall costs and do. You can perhaps argue in the case of returns it's not fair, but I guess they want to keep the pricing formula simple.
