gzt: Superman 9/10. Good mix of action and story and compulsory minor comedy. Nearly made me cry 1.5 times and reminded me of the original, although this one isn't an epic.

"The original one"?
Which one? There have been so many, I am never sure which ones are being referred to...1930's/50's/70's/00's?

Either way - there actually have been some classics, so it's a hard franchise to live up to. I am glad that people are enjoying it.

Heads of State on Prime Video.

Starring John Cena and Idris Elba as the US President and the British Prime Minister respectively.

Hilarity and action ensues when they have to team up when terrorists get involved.
They don't like each other for a variety of reasons, but find themselves working together to save the day and the world.

It's an action "comedy" and is OK light entertainment. It also stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

Official Synopsis: When the U.K. Prime Minister and U.S. President become the targets of a foreign adversary, they're forced to rely on one another to thwart a global conspiracy.

Also saw G20 on Prime.

It stars Viola Davis as the President of the US at the G20 and NZ's own Anthony Starr.

The US President is attending the G20 summit in Sth Africa and a terrorist organisation led by Starr's character  - weirdly an Australian ex Special Forces soldier - comes in and turns the whole place upside down.
Much violence, many dead bodies and some OK action scenes follow. US President to the rescue.

Think Die Hard in Sth Africa, with John McClane replaced by President Viola Davis.

Superman (2025) - 5/10

There has been so much commentary about the new Superman movie lately (particularly, the whole "Superman is woke!" hysteria) that I felt compelled to go and see so I could understand for myself what all the fuss was about.

Firstly - it's not "woke" (whatever that is - not gonna go into that here).  Anyone who felt "offended" by this portrayal of Superman is just engineering hate and rage for their own purposes.  This Superman is just as consistent with the core idea of Superman as any other portrayal of Superman.  I'm also not an expert on comic lore by any means, but as a casual/serious fan of superheroes who has barely read a comic book (but who has seen most of the mainstream superhero movies for the last 50 years), I didn't see anything that surprised me. Superman/Clark, Krypto (though that was interesting - I'd watched DC League of Super-Pets but didn't know that Krypto was "canon"), Lois, Perry, Jimmy, Lex, etc.  Kryptonite.  Powered by the sun.  It's all there.  Maybe that's what the whingers are whining about - Superman is solar powered?  Maybe if Superman ran on coal it'd be fine...

But I mostly found the film a bit bland and boring.  David Corenswet did fine as Superman (we didn't see a lot of him as Clark).  But everything (and everyone) seemed largely forgettable.  Nicholas Hoult is a pretty OTT Lex Luthor (not a bad thing, but a lot of shouting).  But everyone else kind of just faded away like a faint echo.

I kind of liked that the stakes were less all-consuming.  It wasn't a battle for the whole of reality, or the universe, or anything like that.  It was just Lex wanting to kill Superman.  Because...reasons.  But then it begs the question why he tried to be so elaborate about it.  I know, I know - that's the heart of all superhero movies and James Bond - the overly complex plots and schemes.  But if Lex has access to some Kryptonite and has got Supes cornered, why drag it out?

I didn't like the "Justice Gang."  Especially Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern.  I love Nathan Fillion - he's got great comedic timing and instincts, and he's always so good.  But his Green Lantern character was dreadful, and made me pine for Ryan Reynold's version (and that's saying something!)  Mr Terrific was familiar to me only because I watched Arrow; but I found this version so grumpy and terse, it was distracting.  They seemed like they were there for the comedic relief, but there was nothing in this film that made me smile, let alone laugh.  It felt like there was little joy or excitement here.  And that's disappointing, because I really wanted to like this film.

The comedy is average and obvious like all compulsory 'comedy' in all the superhero and action star movies these days. Mostly the kind of things 10 year olds like to repeat. I got very few laughs out of it.

That said, there was a lot of out loud laughing in the theatre I was in.

Overall I really enjoyed it.

Happy Gilmore 2 (Netflix)

I have been looking forward to this coming out since it was announced.

Like the original, it’s not going to win any awards, but it is entertaining. It has a lot of nods to the original, and more than a few of the original cast.

I hate to think how much Netflix spent on the cameos alone. I had to pause the credits to take stock of them all. As well as about 6 members of the Sandler family, and more than one Stiller.

If you enjoyed the original, then I can recommend this for a couple of hours of entertainment.

The Thursday Murder Club - 8/10

The delightful movie on Netflix with a stellar cast led by Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Celia Imrie & Ben Kingsley and other fabulous English actors, whom you will all recognise.

Four irrepressible retirees spend their time solving cold case murders for fun, but their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn when they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Fantastic Four: First Steps - 6/10

I saw this at my local "Slippery Beaver" cinema, and I have to say I wasn't exactly blown away.  It falls squarely in the "nothing major wrong, but nothing majorly right either" category.  It was a little refreshing to not have yet another origin story for the core characters, though in some ways blasting through the history by way of exposition felt like we'd been shortchanged.  My partner and her son - who aren't die-hard nerds with lots of prior knowledge - missed some things that I picked up on.  Such as the setting of this film in an alternate Earth.  Probably not fatal to the overall storytelling, but when so much is just breezed past then it can end up feeling a bit rushed.

The cast were fine, if a little underwhelming.  Pedro Pascal is a good actor, but he seemed fairly bored with his role here.  None of the other cast really stood out for me.

The story felt like it was just a placeholder - introducing the character of Galactus for a later storyline.  I'm not a comic book person so I don't really know much about the character (just vaguely aware of the name and that it's a significant feature for this particular part of the Marvel world).  But it made the movie feel unimportant - whatever they do with these characters, we know they're still going to be around for the inevitable team-up film in a year or two.

I did like the styling - quasi-futuristic retro tech.  Recording data to vinyl was a nice touch, along with the cool flying car.

Watched this last night.

I really hope they develop the other books from this series into a few more similar movies, because this was an easy watch and thoroughly entertaining.

The number of A-List actors in this was astounding!

i have mostly the same sentiments. the lone exception being that i thought Nathan Fillion wasn't bad as Guy Gardner. could've been better for sure, he didn't really have much to play with.

Red Sonja (2025) - 5/10

I just found it lackluster.  The talking almost seemed like it was dubbed even though it wasnt.  Could have been worse, could have been better. Her relationship with her horse is a little sus! Armoured Bikinis.....

Superman (2025) - 5/10

While it wasnt bad I just didnt enjoy it much.  Lex just wasnt bad enough..  The dog was silly.  The story was a typical Superman story of no real excitement.

K-Pop Demon Hunters  - 6/10

It was entertaining. I have threatened everyone with the singalong version next weekend. I thought it would be awful, it wasnt. The songs were not bad..

Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning - 3/10

I never particularly liked the MI movies. Tom Cruise just plays such a one note character in it.  Its just too hard to actually care about anything happening in the movie.

So yeah been a disappointing bunch of movies the last few weeks.  The new Smurfs movie wasnt tooooo bad, the trolls movies are superior though!  On the plus side Ive been enjoying all the different TV series Ive been finishing off lately!

Watched The Amateur starring Rami Malek on Disney+ this past weekend.

It's an entertaining (if completely unbelievable) romp, which starts slow, then builds to an action thriller with enough going on to keep the viewer engaged.

You will have to remove a good chunk of your brain though, as there's quite literally no way that most of it could occur in the real world, but it's a movie and it's entertaining.

F1 The Movie (2025) - 7/10

It was actually quite entertaining. Of course a little too Hollywood but entertaining anyway!  If you like car racing / f1 then you'll most likely enjoy it.  Brad Pitt does a good job. Plenty of spills and thrills.
