I completely agree with this sentiment.

But as the saying goes

”One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter”.
That is, it depends on point of view, opinion and personal prejudices.

But are you saying you should choose what other people should view or listen to based on your world view?

I am saying there are certain moral imperatives that can be agreed on by a large majority of the population. For example, that murder is (usually) bad. Rape is always bad. Acts that cause great suffering to others are probably always bad. And so on.

Agreement on responsible environmental behaviour does not have to get bogged down in politics and legal quibbling. Where there is will and good faith, and a modicum of common sense, most people can agree on fundamental principles.

No I am not saying that I should choose what other people should view or listen to. I am saying that with the right approach, it has to be possible for most people to come to agreement on what is valuable and what is bullshit.

And yet {Mike Hoskin's} is the highest rating radio show in the country.

No it's not, it's the highest rating commercial radio show. The published ratings don't include non-commercial stations, mostly because the results are too embarrassing to the commercial stations who pay for the ratings surveys.

National Radio, in particular Morning Report, has a much higher audience share than any of the commercials, so they stopped including them in their survey outputs.

I concede and withdraw (from this branch of the thread).

Can we get back on topic now?

Newstalk ZB has a bunch of deplorables. To me, Mike H is certainly not a nice person either.

So, while you are not alone in your opinion of him, other’s views may differ.

Isn’t it great to have choice?

I agree Hosking and co rate highly. But...when Newstalk ZB - a designated Civil Defence radio station - has some of their highest rating hosts saying "don't worry about the cyclone, making us prepare for it has screwed up my day therefore I'm going to rant about it" instead of telling people to get to safety, well...

That's like saying that Abe is the most successful left-handed Jewish cardinal ever to pitch for the Yankees in the off-season, it's not like talkback radio is a major market any more. Also when your target audience is (apparently) cranky octogenarians [*] you tailor the content to the audience.

And for people who compared it to Fox, 1ZB is mindrotting drivel, the canonical "everyone in the room is now dumber from having listened to you", but nothing like the poison that Fox pumps out.

[*] I know someone will leap in now and say "hey, I listen to 1ZB and I'm only 76 you insensitive clod!", I'm just using all the talkback listeners I know of as case studies.

Our power was affected by both the flooding-related weather, and Cyclone Gabrielle.
We are now considering a generator - for advice/tips can I ask here on this thread or should I set up a new off-topic thread?

We purchased a ToolPRO Inverter Generator 2200W from Supercheap, should be enough to cycle (one at a time) through fridge, then vertical freezer and then electronics/tv/charge devices/led lights.

Noticed ( ) that the price has dropped from $949.00 pre cyclone to $799.00 now. Suggest do get an invertor generator as although lower power for cost will not fry your electronics.

Listening to talkback radio (and those muppets in particular) is much like listening to a couple of drunk people at a bar that are 'experts' on everything....

I know nothing about forestry and will probably get a black eye for this, but I don't see why forestry slash could not be put to better use in principle. If they can get the damned logs out, they can also get the waste material. Create some employment by training and hiring people to cut it up for firewood and give that away free to people on benefit. Or burn it to fuel some extra power generation. It is going to emit carbon anyway.

This needs correcting.  You'll know this already but probably haven't realised.  When you burn something you're adding oxgen to the material being burned.  For carbon dioxide, that's two oxygen for each of the tree's carbon = a greater amount of carbon dioxide produced than the amount of wood burned. Now when left to rot the tree emits a worse greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide - methane.  Rotting wood however produces much less methane than it would carbon dioxide if burned so the greener option is to let it rot.

I have been thinking about a similar thing. Despite not losing power in the recent events, I am thinking a generator may be a good idea.

We are in the process of getting our distribution board replaced in the house to allow for EV charging and the installation of solar. I’m thinking I will ask how much it would be to provision for a generator.

It would need to be for essential equipment in the house, preferably on 1 circuit.

The house would need to be isolated from the grid while being powered by the generator.

A petrol generator would need to operate in a ventilated, but secure space.

Hopefully I wouldn’t need to charge the EV using a petrol generator 😉

There's already a fairly active thread for this. More towards batteries+solar, but lots of good stuff there.

I happen to have a petrol generator that was purchased several years ago but never used. I also have some extra long extension cords. After a bit of thinking and calculating, I put the generator in the entrance of a doorless garage just out of the rain and ran an extension cord to the house, where I branched an extra outlet to charge my laptop, though I mainly wanted to cool the fridge down. Although it had never been used, the generator started right up and ran smoothly. I let it run all afternoon. Just after I switched it off, the power came back but I was still glad to have it and will know what to do next time.

Solar probably not suitable due to us living in the Waitakere Ranges :) Thanks though!

Noob here - what does an inverter do? I.e. how might that be a better option than a non-inverter model?

Unless you're incredibly shaded it's actually surprisingly viable, the friend of mine that I mentioned in that thread is in Swanson, with tall trees on three sides of the house. For that batteries help, they soak up the sun during the times the house isn't shaded.
