Just pay Customs directly once you get your notice from NZ Post. They accept all payment types and have an 0800 for credit card payments. It's all here:

LostBoyNZ: Last time I was stung with the $75 NZ Post customs fee, on top of the regular GST and such. This time I asked them how I can avoid that, and talked to Customs this morning. They said once I've received the letter from NZ Post, to take it to my local customs office (near Christchurch airport here) with my letter and the invoice from the products, and I can pay them directly.

I guess I can't do it over the phone then with customs and my credit card? I'll give it a try when the letter arrives though.

Otaku: I plan to get several small items from US from different shops. Is YouShop the only choice or are there any which can offer, reliable consolidated shipping?

Prezoom (subsidiary of international shipping consolidator iParcel) is another option. They are priced slightly higher than Youshop but I generally get items quicker - and they already cover the UK, so you can get stuff from Amazon UK/ebay UK etc rather than just US (YouShop are planning this soon).

MyUS.com do free consolidation on multiple store orders.

And it looks like Customs is re-evaluating the trigger amount (de minimus) for GST applied to imported goods.

Also the IETF is increasing:

"Shipments with a value higher than the de minimus also attract a flat-rate Import Entry Transaction Fee of $38.07. That fee will rise to $46.89 at the end of the month when Customs is due to launch the $89 million first tranche of its new computer system, the Joint Border Management System (JBMS)."

This type of thing comes up for discussion every few months - not surprised to see it again around the same time as JBMS go-live and its associated fee increases.

Having lived in Canada for 2 years and importing a bunch of stuff from Europe and USA while there, having a $0 GST threshold really sucks as every item has to be inspected (at least by electronic scanner) to ensure all tax is collected. Leads to items that should take 4 days to be delivered taking 3 weeks if they get a backlog (think: strike action, natural disaster, budget cuts, etc that could cause rippling backlogs).

$400 is a sensible number - now if only the limit was adjusted on clothing to the same amount ...

Has anyone used Youshop for bringing in clothing items??? I really want to buy a few (maybe 2 - 4) (2 for me and 1 or 2 as a gift for my partner) UFC hoodies and was looking at getting them sent this way as looking at Amazon I can't find the info on size of package and weight info for them. Plus the idea of $13.99 USD + another $4.99 per item really bumps that price up a lot to get it shipped directly from Amazon.

Either that or if someone is travelling to the US I'd happily pay any associated costs to get 2 or 3 back into NZ (or even maybe just buy an extra one for them).

I've not used Youshop or Amazon before and although I do buy internationally occasionally I normally am buying from places where shipping is included in the pricing so know exactly how much at all times I pay.

If anyone has any ideas on how much it would cost roughly for the shipping or is interested in doing a fellow GZ'er a shipping favor then please let me know.

In general, if Amazon will ship directly to NZ that's the cheapest way to get something here. Their rates are really good, youshop will be similar but maybe a little more.

Hmm ok so at what point does the shipping get added to the equation???

Do I load the cart up and pay for the items and shipping then add an international address or is the address part prior as it looked a little like some of the items I want are not able to be shipped internationally. (basically wanted to try buy some of the hoodies they have on special but when I look at the international shipping store options none of them show up hence why asked about Youshop as well).

Create an Amazon account, add your NZ address. Go to the product page, add to cart, and try to check out - it's very clear that you have to hit the "order now" button to finalise your order.

If they won't let you ship to NZ then add your custom youshop address (you have to register to get one) to amazon as a second address. Choose free shipping, and order.

I have to guess hoodies will be quite expensive to ship to NZ, because of volumetric weight - ie they won't be heavy, but they will be bulky. They'll probably end up quite expensive, but probably still cheaper than buying clothes in NZ.

As above... We buy all shoes and boots for Bella from Amazon. They ship kids' shoes directly to New Zealand and even with shipping (which you will see after you select an address and before you hit the PLACE ORDER button) these are still half price of New Zealand retail.

Some adult shoes are also shipped directly (no Timberlands though) and Icebreaker stuff (most of the products, just a very few won't ship). I just bought Icebreaker tops, Icebreaker socks and women's hoodie and these are all shipped to New Zealand - and cheaper than buying here in New Zealand.

Remember folks, if using Amazon to buy something please use the Geekzone Amazon order page so we can get a little commission on that (once you get to Amazon from that page everything/anything you order will have our code, for at least a couple of days).

Cheers signed up and all 3 I looked at getting are not able to ship here directly so will see if I can find some that will at a price I'm will to add shipping to. Otherwise it's $60 on main street Levin lol. Now though I do have a account I can look every now and then and see what happens.
