Blackmailing someone with information collected for the "security of the nation" is hardly "spying on commies".

Anyone who is not uneasy about non-transparent state sponsord spying on you, me, your friends, your granny, your neighbours and every other citizen of N.Z. should spend time to watch the multi-awarded movie "The Lives of Others" which shows where unfettered snooping can lead.

Why not?

KiwiNZ: Did I accidently get into a Tardis?

Almost. The news report in question is from 1976.

He was talking about the "spying on commies" line.

The news report is from this week. The break in and taking of FBI papers is from 1976. The burglars came out publicly now but the papers stolen during the burglary were distributed to newspapers (Washington Post, NY Times) back then as "anonymous sources".

This is to give evidence that a) governments are good at spying on citizens and using that for illegal activities b) anonymous leaks have occurred since ever.
