Wondering "when's that cable I ordered going to turn up?", grabbing the phone, and immediately getting an SMS saying "your order will be delivered today".

I'm glad I only wondered it and didn't say it aloud, or it would have taken a hard veer into creepy territory though!

In the bushes down one side of our property we have a spur sewer line, which joins a main sewer a bit further down the hill. All this is owned by Auckland’s water authority, Watercare.

Over the past few weeks we had noticed a bit of a sewage smell on a couple of occasions but had no idea what/where it was. Then last week I was standing next to one of the manholes in the sewer line (not a part of our property that we go to very often) and saw and smelled some liquid sewage start to come out from around a manhole cover. Not much - just a few litres, then it stopped.

At 10am today I rang Watercare about this and they said a crew would come and look at it. At 11am a Downers truck arrived with two guys who checked the line and yep it’s clogged up with tree roots.

They opened up two manholes and cut and dug out the roots in the vertical pipes. Then used a 6,000 psi wireless remote-controlled water hose, with a grinding head, driven by a large ICE pump on their truck, to clear roots out of the connecting pipe between the two manholes. All done by midday.

They told me another crew would come and put an epoxy lining into the system to stop the roots growing back in.

We’re blown away - really incredible service.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

A wry smile this morning ..... car parked along the 2 hour side of our street, and all-day parkers along adjacent Grant Road.

So the street and gutter cleaning contractors came by at around mid-day !!!! They sort of swept the one or two gaps, but then simply went 200 metres up the road (where there is yellow dotted lines anyway) and started again.

By what logic does that clean gutters and sumps with all the cars there in the middle of a working day?

Obviously contractors don't work at night when conditions are favourable to complete the tasks being paid for!!

because people complain when it happens at night because its noisy

In civilized cities they will have set times for sweeping and there is no street parking on those days on those streets.

Exactly this. I remember in Stockholm there were no parking street signs stating days and times so that tree pruning, drains or snow ploughing would be done and you knew to leave that side of the street empty on those days. Very organised society that worked brilliantly.

Today, in Blenheim I saw workers out clearing the gutters and drains before the rain. We're only getting 2mm but it's good practice for them.

People like that should simply he ignored. How many times per month is each street actually swept?

Now the bottle skip guy who comes to an apartment building at 3am ... we had to put a time-lock on the external door to the skip room door because that MoFo wouldn't listen to reason and come after 7am.
