This is one of those subjects like religion and politics that you always try to avoid. Everyone has an opinion and everyone is sure their point of view is the right one.

Personally, I subscribe to the "best tyres on the back" school of thought, regardless of whether the car is FWD or RWD. I believe it's more likely that the rear will lose traction in the wet and spin out than the front.

And remember, tread depth only matters in the wet, on dry roads you’d be better off with a slick tyre but you’re not allowed to do that.    Wink

I subscribe to the school of thought that you take it to the tyre professional and let them do their job. If one set of tyres is significantly worse than the other, replace them. Tyres are pretty cheap given how important they are.

Hard to argue with that.

Yet someone will, no doubt, because that's what the internet's for - arguing ;)

Yes, that's why I was seeking recommendations about shops in AKL

new tyres - always at the back (regardless of RWD/FWD/4WD)

i personally prefer firestone, i have used tyreland in the past when i was in south island

my thinking - i always buy 4 new tyres at once... it is safer and you tend to get better deal by doing that.

The fronts do something like 80% of the braking and all of the steering.

when the dust has settled and everyone has agreed to disagree (as i've said, every car every road condition and every driver condition makes a completely different combo) ... can i suggest you buy a full time symmetrical 4wd with a trick diff that has vehicle stability control

the other dudes are saying that if you put your best tyres here you have a higher limit of aggresiveness in the way you can attack the road - if you did this you have a higher chance of running wide in the corner (understeer) and risk a head on collision when you lose concentration or misjudge the wetness of the road; and with a slight risk of losing the rear end in the most unusual circumstance but if you lose the rear end you're doomed to fate;

but by putting the best tyres in the rear, either
1) they prefer not to attack the road and therefore will have no chance of under nor oversteer
2) they have a powerful rwd with no traction control and are about to do this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0Ve2eNfgPQ (mind you this is a 4wd with perfectly good tyres on all four on dry road)
3) they attack the road but the chance of losing the rear end in the most unusual circumstance is so rare unless you drive like a maniac that there was a low chance of that in the first place
4) they attack the road and their rear tyres save them from harm

this is how easy it is to lose the rear end in a RWD with good tyres on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sq7hLDLgzsQ ... scroll to 30sec, wait for it, crash is at 42 sec, it was a gentle tap on the throttle, and you're gone, tyres ain't saving anyone who can't handle a RWD with traction control off

edit: just please notice how low speed it was, nowhere near 50 kph i'd say
