I just hope England get slaughtered. The collective wailing by the poms would be terrific entertainment in and of itself.

Post England v Italy thoughts:

1. This England team is different. I don't watch them that often and admittedly did think Hodgson is a boring old fool based on his time at Liverpool but he has really changed these guys into playing a much more attractive style.

2. There's serious variety and intelligent movement amongst their forwards. Sturridge looks a truly special player ATM. But Rooney is once again pushing himself too hard and needs to either drop back properly as a playmaker or play more as a roving forward, instead of trying to do both. Right now with him and Sterling both playing quite roving roles, things aren't entirely working ATM.

3. England's midfield remains, as ever, a total joke. Steven Gerrard is back to his "best" (i.e. completely rubbish disappearing acts in a team that's not tailor-made to suit him) -- at least he only attempted a couple of Hollywood passes. When your 3 "best" midfielders are Gerrard, Henderson (haha) and the eternally overrated Jack Wilshere, I am sure the opposition are just going to crap their pants. Hey if they get Lampard on with Gerrard you can pretty much guarantee that every second pass will be misplaced or mis-controlled! LOL.

4. Accuracy/doing the basics right is the name of the game. The commentator craped on and on about how England had the better chances in the first half and the game overall but let's face facts: Italy converted their two chances and, on the first goal, it was arguably only a half chance. The positionally rubbish Leighton Baines got found out on the cross for the second goal, Glen Johnson disappeared on the right for it as well. Wayne Rooney missed an absolute sitter. And compare Marchisio's magnificent shot to all the high and wide rubbish the English players were spraying outside the box.

5. England just doesn't have that star "unlocker" of defences that can just do something magical and put someone through on goal when faced with an organised defence or a big crowd, nor that one person can just control a game. Can anyone play the ball that Pirlo played to send Balotelli through towards the end of the first half? Towards the latter stages of the second half, England were just doing their usual rubbish of charging forward, crossing and shooting and hoping for the best.

6. Andrea Pirlo. That is all.

7. If England can find ONE decent midfielder, Hodgson will drop the rubbish Glen Johnson, and Luke Shaw fulfils his potential, England could make a decent run at Euro 2016. Right now I am betting they aren't even getting out of this group for the WC.

It's a world cup. Some teams are good some teams aren't.

It's footy. The ball is round. Anyone that can win one match and is able to con referees have a chance to win.

Err, do you actually watch the games at all or are you just going to endlessly troll the thread ad nauseum with your own pent up moral outrages?

joker97:
TwoSeven: the offside rule (for example in the Cameroon game where an offside was called from a corner kick because an opposition player touched the ball making some of the attackers offside mid jump for the header)

No it doesn't. The offside call was an error. There was no offside.

One is assuming that you misunderstand rule 11 then ?

Rule 11 has been for a very long time that a player is offside if he is nearer the goal than the ball and the second last opponent (the last being the opponent goalkeeper).  As soon as the ball touched the defending Cameroon player the attacking player was offside because 1) the ball was behind him and 2) the second last opponent player (the Cameroon one that just touched the ball) was behind him (ok, only by half a leg, but that's all it takes).

Just to be clear - if the attacking player hadn't stuck his leg out, he would have been onside.

Been following since 1990. One win is usually enough to get to knock out stages.

In 2006 France nearly lost both their matches before luckily winning game three thanks to some dodgy ref ing. They went on to the final when zizi had a brain explosion.

In 1994 Italy played like crap and won their last group game by the skin their teeth. They went to the final and lost to Brazil penalties.

Normally not a fan of Italian play, but todays game was pretty good - is nice to see England actually attempting to take long shots at goal which traditionally they have not been good at except from a dead ball scenario. However, I did like the Italian style of play, especially how they kept pulling England out to the wings to create the space in the centre.  I think the commentator pointed it out at half time, surprising how much room the Italian skipper was given.

At the end of the day England just aren't very good at playing football.

Every tournament it's about how the could be "their year" with clips of winning the cup in 1966..

Nope they are just rubbish..

I thought England showed more promise going forward than they have for a long time.  They got undone defensively though although even then Rooney missed a golden chance to equalise.

The state of the pitch was appalling and hardly surprisingly the game ran out of steam towards the end as the heat and humidity kicked in.  Its a mystery to me why they are staging games in a town, in the jungle with no senior professional team.    Still good to see some goals going in and (as I write this), still no draws.

absolutely. no different from any other England - Italy game.
Italy - flair, individual flashes of skills, and killer instinct
England - they always look like the have 2 right feet when they play. but there is no shortage of trying, as always.

and man, vintage Italian defenders - hacking down the English - esp the 2 young forwards - every so often.

Welcome to the thread! All the way from opposite side of the world???!

Are you rooting for England? And if you are, are you the 80% that believe in their heart of hearts that England is the favorites at every world cup?

No I'm Dutch, married to a kiwi girl, living in England and moving to NZ next year (probably) - hence why I'm here :)
It would  be nice for the locals to see England advancing but I don't think they will get very far, I was positively surprised by last nights performance though.
As for our performance vs. Spain, I don't think we should get cocky. We have  a good team but they can mess up easily if the odds aren't right. Should be able to manage quarters but after that the going gets tough. There couldn't have been a sweeter revenge for the WC 2010 final than the 5-1 game though :)

Loving this WC so far, especially since I work quite flexible hours and mostly get to work from home. Being able to watch some of the games live is just great.

Geez Argentina looked ordinary this morning. For most of the game, Bosnia actually looked the better team. On this evidence, Argentina appears to have no midfield and no other tactic than getting Messi, Di Maria and Co to blindly run at people and hope that the ball rebounds nicely off an opponent's foot.
