No TV on Freeview Terrestrial at 8am. It was off air when I heard the civil defence siren in the Hutt at 3am? Not very good to have no TV in an emergency. Back to the radio!

Same here.. and continues. Only TVNZ mux, but very low signal strength.

Someone on a local Facebook page was saying the Fitzherbert TV transmitter lost power, and Kordia are working to restore it. I think I'm pointed at Baxters, so still have reception.

My grizzle about the civil defense alerts is that something clearly warranting evacuation of coastal areas happened, but information wasn't being distributed. National Radio didn't have good information from any authority, our local tsunami sirens weren't activated for 2 hours after the quake - until after the bloody waves arrived.

Now in theory a quake with epicentre on land doesn't cause tsunami, but the faults in the area run in a SW:NE direction, the large magnitude suggests a long section of the fault ruptured, the possibility that the section which ruptured included sections under the sea was high. There is also a known particular risk in that Kaikoura coast region from undersea landslide generated tsunami, which might happen at any time with or without a quake to trigger it.

Take that into account, and it's ridiculous that an alert wasn't issued immediately. Two hours later for Chch - that was irresponsible in my opinion.

If you live in a tsunami exposed position near the coast, there's a rule of thumb that if you feel an EQ with strong shaking which goes on for more than about 30 second, you evacuate immediately and return only when you're given the all-clear. Having a national alert system which doesn't follow that basic rule is nuts. I could see the traffic flow evacuating the Chch coast - which made it pretty clear that there's a problem, if there'd been a large tsunami, hardly anybody would have escaped in time. To avoid the "crying wolf" effect, they need to make sure that any alert is cancelled promptly and the all clear given as soon as possible when it's established that the risk is over. There seems to be a centralised "trust us we're the experts" attitude, and a very poor chain of command. Last night they have shaken my trust in their ability to run a p*ss-up in a brewery, let alone a critical national warning system. Very, very poor performance.

Then I'm not happy about Geonet's initial recording of the quake as M7.5, after review by a duty seismologist it was downgraded to M6.6. A M6.6 quake is unlikely to generate a significant tsunami, but a M7.5 surely is. It took ages for Geonet to revise their estimated magnitude, then only after USGS had also revised their estimate up from M7.5 to M7.8.

If that quake had generated a significant widespread tsunami (it was significant but limited to the Kaikoura coast) then our poor alert system would have probably cost lives. Next time may not be so lucky.

It's very poor that with no training in the subject, I could work out how wrong GNS had their estimates using nothing more than a "seat of pants" seismometer, and a quick look at the national seismograph network.

Then as a minor annoyance, they left the flipping tsunami sirens on all night it seemed - long after the risk had passed - just to ensure nobody got any sleep perhaps?

When I was in the US in July, we had storms in New York. I was roaming on VF and all of a sudden my mobile started making a noise it had never made before (sort of alarmed wailing!) and I had 'Priority Messages' warning of flash floods.

Their system just seems to take over any and all mobiles and force them to show the warnings and make the noises.

Do we have that here, and if not, why not?

Can I suggest once the wastes of space have been caught, they are publicly named, mugshots on the front page and public floggings in the town square. Oh and drop them off in the middle of Mosul afterwards. Hard to believe people like that exist.

I think when this happened in Feb 22 event, it was, too busy, remand in custody, we will get back to you when we have time.

There is a photo going around on the internet of a window on Wakefield Street - I was right beside that very window when the quake hit in a Taxi.

Basically at first felt like we hit a deep pothole, the driver swore and was stressing out a bit when we noted it was a quake given the window exploding beside us and the car shaking violently and mortar hitting the roof of the car. He then was asking me for updates during the journey. I then told him to contact his family and ensure they're OK. It wasn't until I got home I saw the real extent of the damage. Kudos however to the Taxi driver who dropped me home despite us driving through the CBD with the glass and also alarms going off.

We were on Kapiti coast, a couple hundy meters from the sea. As quake lasted more than 30 seconds, we decamped to car and drove to the Waikanae hills. It took us about 10 mins to get going as power was cut so fumbling in the dark. Next time will aim for around 5 mins.

What surprised me was how few people did the same. There was us and about three other cars leaving around the time.

Once parked we listened to national radio for about 20 mins. Nothing specific on the radio, and - importantly - nothing from Civil Defence. We were aware that the tsunami sirens hadn't been activated, so we assumed no immediate threat and returned to bed.

Only to wake at 6am to general tsunami warning. Pretty pitiful from Civil Defence, they should be communicating with National Radio within minutes of significant shake (me thinks).

As far as I'm aware, some of the "looting" was local drunks helping themselves to booze in wrecked hotels etc, I'm not aware that that there was widespread looting by civilians.

Some time in the future when suppressed information is hopefully freed up, you'll find out more about the real looting. There were soldiers arrested for looting in the red zone. There seemed to also be some arbitrary assistance to some who were able to access the red-zone to retrieve possessions and records, yet others were denied access. It suggested that if you had the right "connections" then you'd be looked after.

Perhaps the most widespread looting of all, was the rip-off suffered by tens of thousands of privately insured citizens, denied adequate compensation and/or having inadequate repairs carried out by EQC.
