In the past I have just settled for Ryco car parts at Repco etc .. I've always thought the more legitimate places like Amazon the delivery would be costly for such a insignificant item. Even with the postal overseas OEM parts are a bit less than a Ryco part. If one did go to the dealer to get the real stuff here, they are often 2x, if not 3x the price. To take advantage of this I got a shipment arriving next week with a stash that would last me 2yrs. I am also thinking of picking up a second hand lens for a film camera.

We’re getting our kitchen re-done and I was browsing for sinks. Below are a couple of screengrabs from an NZ and a UK seller respectively for the same item. It’s no wonder the NZ consumer feels they’re getting shafted at times.

It’s German made so I know it needs to be transported a lot further, but someone, somewhere is creaming it.

And extremely poor service and support as a result, since the place you bought it from will have to deal with someone else to get parts, who will then have to order them from someone else. No way that it could be sent straight to you because they have to recieve the items, remove any details of where it came from because that is so secret and hard to find, before re-shipping it on to you.

In a lot of cases, it is still absolutely worth it. If something fails/arrives DOA, buy another. You've still saved money.

Lol. This all rings so true. To top it off, so many Kiwi businesses make it damn near impossible to get a price on something in the first place. It's a lot of calling around and talking to people, only for quotes not to come through or having to go through a middle man. When you do get a price it is so ridiculously high and you just wasted weeks chasing them. Everyone just wants to clip the ticket for next to no work. A serious adjustment to the realities of a global market needs to take place or these places will be wiped out when the big retailers get in for real.

On the sinks: I am just bringing in 2 of these. I feel your pain. At least now Bunnings have similar noname sinks at similar prices.

With the following government website it says I need to pay if the GST is $60+. To be under $1,000NZ and no tax means using a smaller business that does not charge GST at the point of sale like eBay / Amazon does.

I wonder how many businesses are going to charge GST and actually pass the money to IRD.

Thinking this will all be for nothing really.

Just noticed an email from NZ post about youshop.

So they want a receipt for stuff you buy. I've used reshippers for facebook purchases before where I have just paypal'd money to people as friends, so no receipt at all. Just another way to make their service less relevant and useful ontop of the needless GST charging.

well i found something i wanna buy for 600 bucks ... would wait until someone tell me next week if i will need to pay gst ...

My hunch was correct. In 2004 I bought 2 relative costing lenses under $1,000NZ but more than $500 I got charged for tax. I am pretty sure some time before that the threshold used to be a $1,000NZ. Anyway ... I think for now if GST is $60NZ it is collectable so the threshold for the merchandise might be around $600NZ. Until December anything less than $600'ish will not be charged for.

From December, anything bought from the large stores / websites will be charged for GST directly by the company / website. Any store which does insignificantly with NZ will not charge for it and the amount of the merchandise can be up to $1,000NZ before it will be pinged at the border.

What one could do is buy on eBay etc now before December. Assuming the seller didn't list the product with a global programme and needs to collect tax for NZ's behalf. They could buy a product less than $1,000NZ and more than $500, no tax collected. It gets into NZ after the 1st of December, it is under $1,000NZ, it gets thru.

From the 1st of December the large websites would be charging for GST right? Smaller stores won't though.

I hope in a years time somebody can establish the true figure from IRD that this change brings is.

It's going to take a huge number of small orders that the Govt will collect a few $$ on to balance out the $400 - $999 orders that everybody can now import GST and IEFT free.

It is simply a ploy to make kiwis buy locally and it is working. NZ is already one of the dearest places in the western world, and I assume it will now just get more expensive with the competition gone.

Look at the prices there and compare what passes for a "sale" here.

Its not going to make any difference slapping 15% on what I buy overseas when the difference is that great.
