My first goal is secure my immediate person -  pick up a large blunt object.  In a pinch, a vacuum cleaner wand may work.

Then my goal is a better weapon - There's a gun store with ammunition across from the Placemakers in Kaiwharawhara.

Then my goal is better clothing and to find my wife - any sporting goods store and then head to agreed meeting point - home.  I'm no good to her if I'm not secure in my person.

Then my goal is food/water - The mall in JVille has food/water, although it may have been raided/swarmed.  I have my earthquake box at home, good for 3 days 2 people.

My house has an attic with a raisable stair, easily secured.  Cut a hole in the side and we have a way to get in and out.

Fire is a concern, fires will rage out of control, and there will be a lot of them.  A lot of stoves will be on when it hits.

If I have to leave town, motorcycle is better than car, and bike is better than walking.  Train tracks are better than roads post collapse.

The trick is to know when it is real, and when it's something else.  There's not much point in breaking the law and stealing a gun when it's just some wussy terrorist attack!

The most important thing to do is to not panic. This was written and foretold in the good book so you should be prepared and expecting it.

1. Take stock of what is around you and look for potential weapons and enemies. This is also a good time to team up - don't worry, you can dispose of any help later on... you can push them into the path of zombies later. If possible save female company (as I mentioned before you will need to repopulate the human race).

2. Transportation. If you have read the signs and it is still early in the infestation (well done) the roads should still be relatively clear, so a car will be ok. Later, you will need something with good off-roading potential and zombie protection so keep an eye out for something suitable. Your Grand Theft Auto training will aid you in this level.

3. Head towards your designated meeting spot. The rest of your survival gear should be here to take you to your secluded destination.

If the opportunity arises in between destinations, get extra supplies i.e. food, water, ammo, women. But remember, your first responsibility is saving yourself!

This discussion is great, and I decided to gift some Monteith's beer to the OP, part of the Worth Talking Over campaign (www.worthtalkingover.co.nz)... Beer's on its way!

Actually, I've often (oddly) run the scenario through my head whilst at the supermarket.... Why? I have no idea.

I'd run for the nearest supermarket and live up in the false ceiling.. Warmth, Electricity and all the ice cream I could eat... Zombies can't climb into false ceilings... can they?

Well I wasn't asking about http://www.thecheese.co.nz but more about cheese as in food, available at supermarkets. I am sure zombies don't cheese, do they?

I actually thought of the shipping container idea buried below, but I figured that a shipping container or two on an articulated truck would be the go. Keep mobile, and run down zombies!

Also, firearms are overrated, but I'd still keep a nice supply of semi-automatic weapons handy, just for good luck. As well a nice supply of urea and diesel. Or fertiliser and ammonia. :) When bullets fail. explosives are the next best thing.

But, I'd also go out Blade style and let a couple of nice sharp katanas do the talking as well. Hey they did say in Zombieland that cardio *is* important. :)

Ahh, I was mistaken.  Well yes, there is cheese there so could be a goer.. However, I won't be going near the blue cheese as it's pretty gross after eating too much of it. :)

Slight twist on this thread.... say theres a Zombie outbreak while youre at work and you cant leave the building - how long do you think youd last ? Is your place of employment secure against zombie attack ? :)

Where I am in the building, heck no, all glass windows floor to ceiling. Id be heading straight to the next floor where theres only one way in/out and barricade it.

Then throw files at them becuase thats all Id have as protection :(

Would this be an appropriate topic for my next Health And Safety or OSH meeting ? I want Zombie protection!

hmmm... my work place has 2 glass walls (very fragile), the back office might be fortifiable but i also have a supermaket sharing the same carpark as me.. so if anything did hit the fan im pretty i would be in the thick of it very quickly

oohooh, there is a construction sight in the carpark too though so i might be able to get my hands on a circular saw or 2, and maybe some wood to nail down the doors

but even in the event of a zombie uprising im sure someone would walk into the store and expect me to help them with some trouble or other..so no, I'd be toast
