the plumber i called yesterday when i lost all water to the house, he arrived when he said he would, dug up the front yard to find the blockage and laid some new pipe , it took him a hour and a half and he finished just as it was getting dark and the part that really made me smile is he only charged $150 on a emergency call out on Saturday . Restored my faith in tradies.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Bought a failed heatpump off Trademe for $18.50 Replaced a failed resistor and MOV on the main circuit board in the outdoor unit. Around $2 or so worth of parts.

Fixed.

Working heatpump for $20. And I have saved otherwise usable equipment from ending up on the scrapheap. It is a 5.5KW inverter unit as well.

The small cutouts for the logos.  So when I pulled up behind this at the lights in Chch the other day, I knew exactly what it was I was looking at.

Being presented with this ad when I'm rather folically challenged.

(I have no idea what I might have searched for or clicked on to have prompted it.)

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

I've recently been getting ones for AMI insurance... in Chinese. I also have no idea why!

Seeing the Starlink satellite fly over this morning.  Visually underwhelming yet,as a geek, weirdly exciting and interesting.

I have childhood memories of going out at night with my father to watch one of the very first satellites go over. It would have probably been one of the Explorers that was visible from earth. I think the Americans also launched a reflective satellite that was intended to be visible. That may have been the one I saw.

A few years ago I saw the ISS go over and that really was spectacular, like someone shining a torch down from space. I couldn't believe how bright it was.

It's common to see a claim that "Macs are good for video". I just did a test. My desktop is a couple of years old; it's a 3.3 GHz i5 with 16 GB of RAM and an SSD. I also have a 4-year-old MacBook Pro with similar specs.

I just ran an ffmpeg process on both machines. Both had the same version of ffmpeg and were processing the same file in the same way. The Mac did it in around 1/15th (!) of the time of the PC. That certainly made me smile, after the shock wore off!

Snagging the excellent Dynaudio Music 7 unit with 25% off to replace my ageing B&W Zeppelin which now retires gracefully, Not Out, to the Pavillion (in the form of our guest wing).
