happyone65: could some body please help me,im a 69yr old pensioner and on the 2nd of january i brought a laser blu-ray player bd3000 from dick smith in masterton and it needs fixing,i have been into the store and all they will do is give me a phone number to ring, what else can i do to get it fixed?

thanks for any reply's i get.

So that was purchased before the receivership.

That means that the current business (Dick Smiths in receivership) has no legal obligation to to help you.

I expect that the number that they gave you was for the manufacturer or importer. Those people are legally obliged to help you and so you should contact them.

If you do not want to call yourself, perhaps you can get somebody to call on your behalf.

I personally don't like some of the agressive tactics that FH are taking. I think it is destroying the value of the brand and therefore the value of the company as a going concern. I think they will have a hard time selling it as a going concern now. NZ consumers are fickle and we have long memories. Even suppliers are hesitant to be honest - even with the guarantee of the receivers. We are extending credit to them but at a much smaller limit and shorter terms than we would normally give such a retailer. I know there are other distributors/suppliers who are not supplying them at all or have put them on COD. (Unfortunately that will make it harder to run the business and could lead to a vicious cycle of sorts).

I do think it will be tremendously interesting to see what happens. I still think that the company should be bought by somebody like James Pascoe Limited who are passionate retailers and have a great deal of experience in turnaround projects. If it is taken on by anyone other than a through-and-through retailer I don't think it will survive very long.

I ordered some items end of December. Most items arrived, only 6 HDMI cables didn't (2 packs of three)

I emailed and phoned DS but heard nothing until today. They asked what hasn't been received, which I thought they would know!?

He said the item was out of stock and that I could either wait for more stock or an alternate item at an discounted price.
I said just send me 6 hdmi cables! He didn't reply after that lol.

Another weird thing happened, my card was originally charged at the end of December, and then there was a pre authorisation of the same amount showing as a debit on my account. Luckily the bank reversed it, pretty dodgy tho.

Not to mention that it isn't a kiwi brand, it is named after a rich ozzie who sold it decades ago. It needs to disappear as a brand IMO, as it's time has come and gone. It's attempt at reinventing itself failed.

Some stores still have a good name for enthusiastic staff and knowing some technical stuff. Probably not all stores.

Overall they have such an odd combination of locations and market position it would be a challenge to turn it around but not impossible.

This is what happen to me, 1 authorisation and then charged (yet the authorisation was still on my card as well).  I was lucky and it was only an extra $30 hold on my credit card for a few days however going by this facebook they were "holding and processing sales" on everyone, 1 woman had over $800 held + the purchase of $800 (1600 in total for $800 worth of goods).
I talked DSE about it and they did not care, told them it was not good enough as that could have been money that a family needed for food/bills.  Reply was "wait a few days and it will be released".

I agree. They became just another appliance store and there are more than enough stores selling appliances. A number of names have disappeared already (Bond & Bond, LV Martin... although the owners of these stores were consolidating brands) and one more won't make much difference. There are enough others in the marketplace to keep competition (read "prices") pretty much where they are now.

I pretty much agree 100% and it's certainly interesting to hear from those who are suppliers to DSE.

I have randomly walked into four DS stores to have a look over the last week or so. As someone who works (partly) in the area of managing an entity's commercial reputation, I am appalled to see usually nothing but one tiny A4 notice of the receivership taped to the door. The paper isn't laminated or anything like that. Two of the stores had aggressive signs saying "We are not having any close down sale" and another two obviously had the layout of the store arranged to emphasise their private label crap.

You. Can't. Make. This. Stuff. Up.

Against a background of massive media coverage of how their brand is being rejected for high prices and offering private label stuff (in particular) that is expensive and low quality, emphasising this during the receivership (presumably on the receivers' and senior management's instructions) just screams of a stunning tone deafness and lack of brand contrition. The stores are always sparse, except for over-stocked private label crap and things like far too many boxes of anti-virus software. Meanwhile, almost nothing desirable is being offered at a competitive price. If they are trying to generate cash to repay creditors, I don't know how this is helpful; if they are trying to sell as a going concern, as you say this is just hopeless.

DSE Stores make for inside exercise, do a couple of laps then leave, that is all really. They are largely irrelevant and have been for a while. Sometimes the end really is the end and the right thing.

I think it's worth remembering that this store has already had a brand reinvention.  That led to what it is now today.

They've been low on stocks of a lot of areas ever since that last owner crowd sold a lot of stock and used that revenue to complete their purchase, rather than restock.

I too am amazed at the sheer amount of home brand products, that are quite device specific.  It's like the went all in on iPad 2 covers or something several years ago.  There's an epic amount of neoprene rubber floating around in these stores.

Much like Bond and Bond, this name will most like slip away into history.  Realistically it's been that way for many years now, with the store having a major identity crisis.  Trading on the name of a past owner from Australia just hasn't been enough.

I've just been offered 2 HDMI cables instead of 6. I pointed this out to the DSE contact, but he said my item was out of stock and I could only have something of similar value.

Is this right?
