Got two possums in 3 days using a Timms trap. Actually 2.2 possums - one was a pup.
This is in suburban Glenfield ( Auckland), and no bush or reserves around. Plenty of mature trees though.
Purchased and setup on Saturday, caught Sunday, and Monday nights. On one piece of apple.

Well if you baited it with meat then possibly not, but cats (while very curious) , really aren't interested in Apple slices.
Also, cats have quite wide heads with larger ears and possums quite small heads and ears.

Haven't caught a cat yet - and there are plenty of neighbourly roamers ...
It takes a bit of force to trigger the release - meaning the possum has to get a good bite on the apple, and give it quite a yank before the trap is released.
Cats may stick their head in out of curiosity, but I don't think they'll take the bait.
Interestingly, with the last possum that was trapped, something had a go at its scruff of the neck - there were bits of fur all around.
Not sure if it was another possum, rats, or birds.
No more captures in the last 5 days.
