kingdragonfly: Regarding undercounter microwave, be careful of letting kids heat stuff up in the microwave, in particular hard candy, to soften it up.

The microwave can turn the insides into molten lava, while leaving the outside unmelted, or worse explode when picked up, bitten into. There have been cases where children were burnt bad enough to have permanent scarring.

There also the rare superheating of liquids that could cause scalding.

My mother had significant eye injury from hot liquid exploding in a microwave.

People that drive around with their rear fog light on. It's red and intensely bright. Feck right off with that thing, there's not even any fog! 😠😠

The consumer ones aren't even any good either.

You've got the ones that just go bang. And that appears to be about it.

And yet people continue buying them by the carton and letting them off all year round for no apparent reason. And you can't call noise control because by the time they turn up, they've finished letting off that nights artillery.

I bought some photoelectric smoke alarms because Consumer NZ said I should. I was happy enough with the ionisation alarms but Consumer NZ and the fire authorities and RNZ and everyone else and their dog all started shouting that these were no longer good enough and only photoelectric would do the job. Actually, one of my ionisation alarms saved the day when my computer caught on fire, but what do I know?

So I bought some photoelectric alarms. They immediately started giving me repeated false alerts, usually in the middle of the night. We have high ceilings and I would have to go outside to get the big ladder, tripping over myself on the way from the dark and sleepiness.

So I took the #$%$!@ alarms back to Bunnings and complained. They were very nice and gave me some spiffy new jobs with built-in batteries in exchange. These are 10-year alarms and they can't be opened or the batteries removed.

While making dinner last night, one of them went off. It was really loud. I checked the room and there was no smoke, just that damned screeching alarm. I went for the ladder.

The alarm has a test button that also works to silence it. Having learned from past experience, I didn't trust it so removed it and put it on a table and went back to dinner.

After a few minutes, the alarm started screeching again. All I could do was press the button. I couldn't open it or remove the battery, as I might have done with one of the older alarms. This happened again. And again. Finally I took the alarm and put it in the freezer, hoping that might shut it up. It didn't. The damned thing kept going off every couple of minutes.

Dinner was reaching a critical point. I had had enough. I removed the screaming alarm from the freezer, took it outside, and thoroughly smashed it with a hammer. Many times. God, that felt good.

I wonder what Bunnings will say when I return it?

I've seen those ones with the built-in batteries and have avoided them having foreseen that exact issue!

My mobile phone rang, so I pulled over on an empty road in front of some parking spaces with my turn signal on, close to the curb.

It wasn't a parking space, but it was in front of a number of spaces. There was never oncoming traffic, and it was a straight road. There's was no center line, certainly no double line.

A number of cars pass me without issue, but one decides to pull right up of my tail.

I pull forward a few feet, and wave to them to pass me. Again it pulls right up on my tail.

Still no oncoming traffic. Several cars are now queuing behind the car. I refuse to move this time, so a lady pops out of the passenger side.

"My partner is an off-duty cop, and says you should not be driving and talking." (I wasn't driving, and hadn't moved until they got on my tail). "He says he'll call up his friends and give you a ticket for driving and using a mobile phone."

I said "Thank you for your consideration", and pull around the corner into a parking space

My cat. I limit his outdoor time to keep him out of fights with the other cats. But now that it is summer, he keeps pushing me to let him out earlier and earlier. He does that by walking back and forth over my laptop while I am trying to read my morning email. He does it very deliberately and his meaning is unmistakable. He is calculating and cunning and very annoying.

This kind of thing certainly happens elsewhere with similar things - this one from the UK a while back:

"A woman has been given a three-year ban for drink-driving for pushing a car to a safer place after it ran out of petrol.
Christine Prescott's ex-husband had been behind the wheel but he abandoned the motor when it broke down a few minutes' drive from their home.
He walked off to a nearby pub but Prescott felt she needed to move it to a nearby parking spot as he left it in "a very dangerous place".
But the 52-year-old was spotted by police who had been called by a member of the public who saw her pushing the Ford Ka in Sawston, Cambs.
A roadside breathalyser found she had 50 mgs alcohol in 100 mls of breath - the legal limit is 35 micrograms.
Prescott, of Sawston, was charged with driving whilst disqualified, driving under the influence of alcohol and using a car with no third party insurance."

it's more for the person stopped at traffic lights , roadworks traffic jams so you probably wouldnt get a ticket but one rule covers everything.

Common sense is not as common as you think.
