Mentions at 3:50 that China has an agreement with North Korea where China will defend NK if it's attacked. That's not something you want to find out if China will honor or not after an attack happens. Let's not forget that China doesn't really like the US and its military power either

It could also make it mighty awkward for John Key if anything were to happen... do we suck up to the Chinese or Americans?

I expect that Attack means if the US or SK attacked, but not if they retaliated to a DPRK attack. SK or US nor anyone in todays world will attack DPRK, that option is reserved to the propoganda that their citizens live by.

China and Russia are pissed off with NK

They won't care if NK are annihilated from retribution

china - US Russia -US are love hate relationships a bit like apple-Samsung but way more intricate

There is nothing in it for China or Russia to attack US, it will only spark the beginning of the end of the world ...

hence ... WWIII

First point, yes, second, no, imo

DPRK is well placed. It is a barrier to the west, more specifically the US being on their doorstep. Yes, ok, they are in Japan, SK, Philipines to name a few, but imagine if DPRK went belly up, SK became Korea, with US as friends and allies. Not ideal for China or Russia. With DPRK in the way, it helps to keep a balance from China/Russia viewpoint.

If I got on sort of ok with a neighbour, but not tooo much, with some distrust, best he lives 4 houses away instead of over me fence

China has entered the global market in the 21st century. Polices change. Leaders change. With out directly calling Kim out, they have said enough is enough. History is watching them now and they will answer to the needs of the greater good.
It will not be as we expect... But they will play ball.
Communism and global capitalism = conscience when the world is watching and money is to be made.

And here it starts.

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/asia-pacific/2013/04/201341343052867973.html

A united front with China at centre stage. This is their time to shine. Only China can do this (lead this attempt).

I will take the negative approach on this. Great move, I fully agree, but I see this, not ending in tears, but ending in food and oil. What DPRK blackmail for as usual. Next year we read that they arent keeping to their anti proliferation promises. And it goes on. I hope this is not what happens

not sur if tha't the main point

nth korea's crazy obsession to create nuclear warheads and other toys must be stopped ... giving food or not is irrelevant at this type of issue

i ='m not sure what will happen if nth korea keeps developing their tech ... attack??

That's how I see it as well.

The game changer here is the very real threat Kim (or his handlers) are now throwing around with their developing nuclear capabilities.

The balance has now shifted and has effectively negated the Treaty of non-proliferation on nuclear weapons as he runs around unchecked and threatening nuclear strikes against the US.

This is what will unite the entire region.

Why.... money. It will cost a lot more to stabilize a country which ends up having a 'nuclear incident' as opposed to preventing it happening in the first place.

Its like placing a band-aid on a wound and not treating the underlining cause. Every year it just gets worse and worse (and more expensive)

My 2 cents anyway.

The standard practice has been to offer threats, develope nuclear tech. The US and I assume others have negotiated to exchange oil and food for cessation of nuclear proliferation. Last year I think it was, the west said no. No food and oil as they are refusing to stop nuclear efforts. This has heightened DPRK's recent actions. I am no expert, but many articles I have read reaffirm this

Yep, that's it exactly as far as I can tell, too. But the problem with that strategy is that there's no way to break the cycle, especially once it's gone this far, where they are now within spitting distance of mastering the warheads and the missiles.

It would be suicide to use them, but these are crazy people.

The easy part is the bandaid, oil and food, as has been the case in recent years. How to resolve this I have no idea. Negotiation, being no nuclear for oil and food wont work, and they stooped that blackmail being rewarded last year. If this blows, IMO it becomes a situation of relations in Asia, China, Russia, Japan, USA, and DPRK as an afterthought. It needs calm, which is what I see from the US, China, Russia, Japan. But what if a missile is fired? It may be an accident, it may be a show of force not meant to hit anything. What if it does get fired at a target, and it gets shot down by US/Japan anti missile weapons? Can the west retaliate? Yes, that is the rule of war. Can they go all out? No. Can they take out known missile sites, and perhaps Pyongyang nuclear facility and leave it at that? Maybe. Good, sensible, defense only attack, but its an attack.

I still think nothing will happen except negotiation, and that wont work.
